Rozmowa sterowana A

A: I wonder if you could help me. I'm starting to work here next

week and I need to register at the local tax office.

B: Really? That's great. But do you know where it is?

A: I hoped you could tell me.

B: Oh yes. It's at ul. Truskawkowa.

A: How can I get there?

B: The number 18 bus goes there. You get there from the bus

stop opposite.

A: Really? That's great. I hope someone can speak English

there.

B: I hope so, too. Do you think you need help? I could go with

you.

A: Are you sure?

B: Yes, of course. Just tell me when you want to go. It's not

very far from here.

A: Thank you so much. You're a great help.

B: No problem.

A: Don't say thieves don't appear on trains. For example, my luggage was stolen on a train some time ago.

B: Really? What did they take?

A: My wallet with almost all my documents. It was last summer on a sleeper train going from Kraków to Szczecin. In the compartment there were two other people, an elderly couple. I took the upper bed. I fell asleep of course. I had put the documents, the tickets, and money in several places on the bed and in the pockets of my clothes. The two people who were with me went to sleep even before me. I woke up in the very early morning. The man and the woman were already up. [I didn't suspect anything.] We stopped at some station and they started to leave, we said goodbye, and then the woman said to her husband, "Wait, I can't find my documents." They started looking for them and discovered they didn't have any money. I panicked and also discovered that I didn't have my wallet or documents. We went to the conductor and reported it to him. He said that it was impossible for a thief to get to the compartments at night, because he locked the doors. Next, he took us to a policeman, who couldn't help us. You know, it is very hard to discover who stole your things if they are no longer where you are. But I strongly suspect that perhaps these elderly people got my things. You never know. [On the other hand, they were so convincing in their panic]

B: Did you somehow get the documents back?

A: No, never. They probably threw them away. I had to get new documents. It was my ID and my driving licence. I was lucky I kept more money deep in my luggage.

B: Yeah. But what you've just said is horrible.

A: I know I will never fall asleep on the train again.

B: What a lesson to learn!

A: Oh, yes.

Rozmowa sterowana C

A: When I was waiting at the bus stop this morning, I heard people talking about burglars in this street. They have broken into three houses in the last two weeks.

B: Yeah, we've heard that, too.

A: I think something has to be done about it. Is your house insured, for example? I wouldn't leave windows open or doors unlocked like this, you know. I'm sorry, but I am worried. I have experienced something like this.

B: You shouldn't worry. It's a really quiet street. People know one another. They leave houses and cars unlocked and nobody is interested in them.

A: Yes, it may be true, but you must do something. Anything may happen, also here.

B: OK, but what can we do? [If it's going to be broken into, it will.]

A: I suggest at least checking doors and windows. For example, the door to the garden shouldn't be left unlocked at anytime. Even if there is somebody home, a burglar may come quietly from the garden and take a wallet or this camera over there. And windows upstairs shouldn't be left open if there is nobody home. These people may get inside the house through them. It's the least you can do, but it really reduces the risk.

B: Yeah, maybe you're right. When we go out, we're going to check the windows if they bolted and also the doors downstairs.

A: Thank you. I hope it's not a burglar-friendly house anyway.

B: It can't be. Thanks.

Opis ilustracji

This is a picture of a burglar. He's a young man of about 25. He's wearing a woollen hat that is covering all his hair. I can only see his sideburns on the left side of his face. He's wearing a black jumper, black leather gloves, black shoes, and dark blue jeans. He's standing on the roof tiles between floors and he's trying to open the window with a piece of metal. He's trying to see through the window what is happening inside. I can only see him from his left as he's standing in front of the row of windows on the same floor. [All of them are covered with Venetian blinds.] It's rather bright, so it may still be daylight, or the light is coming from a lamp somewhere near the camera because the man's shadow is behind him.

1. is the burglar going to get into the house or rather not?

Why do you think so? It is very hard to predict if the burglar will get into the house or not. But I think he will not. It is rather bright there, it may even be daytime or the light is coming from a lamp somewhere outside. He can be seen by somebody from the street or by a neighbour, who can call the police. In my opinion he may hear a noise and that will frighten him a little. The house may have a burglar alarm and it will be turned on when he breaks the glass in the window for example.

2. How can ordinary people stop burglars from breaking into their homes?

Ordinary people can stop burglars in many ways. For example, people should always be friendly with the neighbours, because they are the best insurance against burglary. People can also install a burglar alarm at home. Even a cheap alarm may discourage a burglar if he knows it is there. Next, people shouldn't show off how rich they are. Avery expensive car is a good thing but only when it is hidden in a garage and not outside for everyone to see. A big house with rich ornaments outside also looks attractive to burglars.
