1. — Past Tense — The simple past of regular verbs is formed by adding -de or -den to the tirst person singular of the simple present (See Lesson 37, Comment 3). Kennen, ik ken, ik kende, we kenden. Leren, ik leer, ik leerde, we leerden. Some regular verbs, however, have -te and -ten instead ot -de and -den. This applies if the first person singular ends in one of the following un-voiced consonants: -k, -ch, -p or -t. Werken, ik werk, ik werkte, we werkten; lachen (laugh), ik lach, ik lachte, we lachten; hopen, ik hoop, ik hoopte, we hoopten; spotten, ik spot, ik spotte, we spotten.

If the first person singular of the verb ends in -f or -s, one must notice which consonant appears in the infinitive. If it, too, is f or s, one adds -te instead of -de. Oppassen, ik pas op, ik pastę op, we pasten op; blaffen (bark), hij blaft, hij blafte, we blaften. But if there is a v or z in the infinitive, the simple past is usually formed with -de. Leven, ik leef, ik leefde, we leelden; reizen, ik reis, ik reisde, we reisden.

If you always start off with the present tense, you will know whether there must be one or two d’s or t’s: antwoorden, ik antwoord, ik antwoordde (-d at the end of the present+de). we antwoordden; spotten, ik spot, ik spotte (-t+te), we spotten; praten, ik praat, ik praatte, we praatten.

Notice that the past participle usually ends in -d. Leren, ik heb geleerd; kennen, ik heb gekend; storen, ik heb gestoord.

However, with verbs that end in -te in the simple past, the past participle ends in -t. Ik werkte, ik heb gewerkt; ik maakte, ik heb gemaakt.

If, however, the first person singular of the present tense ends in -d or -t, it is not doubled in the past participle. Ik antwoord, ik heb geantwoord; ik wacht, ik heb gewacht.

2.    — Compound Nouns — The number of compound nouns which can be formed in Dutch is virtually unlimit-ed. They are usually written as one word. A life insur-ance (policy): een levensverzekering\ a traffic accident: een verkeersongeval\ the liftboy (elevator boy): de liftjon-gen; a bus stop: een bushalte; sky blue: hemelsblauw.

3.    — Er — This little word has several meanings:

(a) There' with 'is' and 'are'. Er is niemand op straat: There is no one in the Street. Er zijn veel oude huizen in deze straat: There are many old houses on this Street.
