Koala bear – a crochet pattern by KAMLIN

Koala bear crochet pattern
Used material:
light grey (2 balls), white (1 ball), light pink and black (just a little of each) (We used Czech
production wool Elian Nicky, 50g/152m, 100% Acrylic)
Toy stuffing material (e.g. 100% PES)
Thread to sew it all together
Safety eyes (size 12 mm – black) (or you can embroider the eyes)
Strong thread – if you want movable legs and arms to sew them on the body
Hook no 4 for yarn (not for wool) – or according to the used material
Small piece of white felt for eyes white to place under the safety eyes
Small button to decorate the body – here we used small plastic pink button shaped as heart
We crochet with single crochet (SC), use slip stitch (Sl St) to join the rows. Start each row with two chain stitches (Ch)
– (do not count the chain stitches into the total count of stitches) – and finish each row with slip stitch.
Terminology:
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
HDC = half double crochet
TRC = triple crochet
Ch = chain
DEC = decrease
Sl St = slip stitch
Nose: black color

If you want you can make the legs and arms movable as you can see in the picture below. This
Koala bear does have such legs but without using buttons. It is better to not use buttons if smaller
kids would play with the toy. If the bear is for bigger kids, you can use buttons so the legs and
arms would move even better. Don’t forget to use strong thread which does not break easily!
Detailed description how to sew on legs using buttons can be found on our blog:
http://kamlin-patterns.blogspot.cz/p/tips-and-tricks.html
Sew on the nose (stuff it a little with the toy stuffing first), attach ears; embroider mouth and eyebrows with black thread. Than
attach the crochet heart on the belly and sew on the pink button. If you wish you can use black thread to embroider black short
lines over the heart so it would look like a patch.
Now when the bear is finished you can decorate the ears so it would be shaggy. I took the same material (Elian Nicky) in white;
cut 3-4 cm long pieces (the length is not too important, you will shorten the length at the end so the pieces do not have to bee
the same length each; just do not cut them too short because it would be difficult to work with it). Than I always took 3 pieces at
once, placed them on the ear and using white thread I sewed it on the ear with one stitch using sewing needle. Than I took
another 3 pieces together and did the same next to the first stitch… all the way to the end of the ear. Than, to make sure it stays
on place well, I made stitches with white thread all the way back over the white yarn. Than I took scissors and cut the yarn short,
so the ears would look shaggy.
