FILM FESTIVALS
A
BFI London Film Festival
With feature films, documentaries and shorts from more than 50 countries, this is
the largest public film festival in the UK and it takes place in mid-October. It started
in 1953, when some British film critics thought London needed a film festival. They
were convinced that Londoners deserved a chance to see films that were probably
too ambitious for mainstream cinemas. Today the festivals both present films by
renowned directors and look for new talents. The festival is very big, so the
screenings are in a dozen venues in central London. Tickets can be as expensive as 16
pounds, but they sell out fast.
B
Warsaw Film Festival (WFF)
The Warsaw Film Festival is an annual event and takes place in October. When it started
in 1985, it was modestly called Warsaw Film Week. Now, with more than 100,000 visitors
every year, it is a big international event. Actually, in 2009, the International Federation
of Film Producers Associations recognised it as an important festival, next to Cannes,
Venice or Berlin. The festival shows all types of films (feature films, documentaries and
short films) and attracts films from many parts of the world. All films are screened in their
original versions with English subtitles. But Polish subtitles are displayed for many films as
well.

C
Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF)
The LIFF is the largest festival in England outside London and it is celebrated at the
beginning of November. It is supported by the Leeds City Council and, actually, some
screenings take place in the Town Hall. One of the highlights of the festival is the Night of
the Dead, a marathon of horror films, which was first organised in 2001. Since then it has
become a real classic among festival fans, so this year the festival is organising the Day of the
Dead with some 10 hours of terror. The best film in the official selection of the festival gets
the Golden Owl Award.
