Interviewer
Hello and welcome to The Music

Show. On today’s show, we have
three members of the indie rock
band Showdown, Paul Green,
Mike Turner and Andy Rowlands.
Welcome.

Paul, Mike and Andy Hello!
Interviewer Where are you all from?
Andy

We’re from Newport in Wales, but
we all live in London now.

Interviewer Who writes your songs, Paul?
Paul

I don’t write songs. I don’t like
writing music! Mike and Andy write
all our songs.

Interviewer What are your musical influences,

Mike?

Mike

We have a lot of different musical
influences. We like traditional jazz,
blues, and Andy loves Irish music.
We’re also big fans of American
bands like REM and Kings of Leon.

Interviewer Is there any music you don’t like?
Paul

Uh ... We don’t like R&B much and
we hate dance music and techno!

Interviewer What instruments do you play,

Andy?

Andy

I’m the singer. I don’t play an
instrument. Paul plays the guitar
and he also sings. Mike’s the
drummer. We also have a bass
guitarist and a keyboard player but
they aren’t here tonight.

Interviewer When is your next gig?
Paul

We’re playing in London on
Saturday. After that, we’re going
on tour around the UK and Europe
– Germany, Spain, France and
Holland. See you there!

Exercise 10
Paul

What special days do you celebrate,
Kirsty?

Kirsty Well, I always celebrate my birthday, of

course. It’s on 4th July.

Paul

What do you do?

Kirsty We always have a big party at my house.

All my friends bring me presents. It’s
great!

Paul

What other special days do you like?

Kirsty I love Christmas! It’s a special time for me.

I like being at home with my parents and
my sister. I like Halloween, too.

Paul

What do you do at Halloween?

Kirsty We have a lot of fun. We all wear

Halloween costumes – witches, vampires,
ghosts, you know. And we listen to music
and dance.

Paul

It’s Bonfire Night tomorrow. Are you
doing anything special?

Kirsty Yes! My dad’s got some fireworks and

some of my friends are coming to our
house for a party and to watch the
fireworks.

Paul

Do you eat anything special on Bonfire
Night?

Kirsty Yes! We always have hotdogs and we

drink hot tea because the weather’s
usually really cold. How about you, Paul?
What special days do you celebrate?

Paul

My birthday, of course. It’s tomorrow!

Kirsty Great! What are you doing?

James
What do you want to do when you leave

school, Anna?

Anna Hmm … there are a lot of jobs I’d like to

do. And a lot that I don’t want to do!

James What don’t you want to do?
Anna Well, I don’t want to be a taxi driver.
James Why not?
Anna I think it’s a boring job. They just drive

around the city all day.

James I see.
Anna And I don’t want to be a hairdresser. My

sister’s a hairdresser, but I don’t want to
work in the same place every day.

James So what do you want to do?
Anna Hmm … maybe a judge. It’s an interesting

job, but it’s difficult. No, I want to be a
police officer. I think it’s an exciting job!
What do you want to do?

James I want to be a mechanic or a builder.
Anna Do builders get a lot of money?

James Yes, sometimes. What about police

officers? Do they get a lot of money?

Anna Not really. But money isn’t important to

me.

James Yes. I want an interesting job, not a lot of

money.

Unit 4 Test A & B
Exercise 10
Robert
What do you think about reality shows,

Jane? Do you like them?

Jane

I love reality shows. I watch programmes
like Big Brother and Pop Idol.

Robert What’s Big Brother?
Jane

You know! A group of people live in a
house together and we can see and hear
everything that they do.

Robert Oh, yes. I know. It’s called Loft Story in

my country. I think it’s a bit boring!

Jane

I don’t think so. The people in the house
are trying to win a prize, so they do a lot
of funny things.

Robert And what do they win?
Jane

£100,000! The TV viewers decide who
stays in the house and who leaves, and at
the end there’s one winner.

Robert I see. Do you watch it every week?
Jane

No ... I watch it every night! It’s on at
nine o’clock and I always watch it.

Robert What do your parents think about it?
Jane

They don’t like it! They only like the
news. It’s so boring!

Robert It isn’t. I watch the news every day.
Jane

Really? What other programmes do you
watch?

Robert I love watching football. I like Champions

League football matches. And I
sometimes watch documentaries.

Jane

I never watch documentaries. Oh!
It’s nearly nine o’clock – time for Big
Brother
...

Robert OK! Bye, Jane. Go and watch your

favourite show!

Jane

Bye, Robert!

Unit 5 Test A & B
Exercise 11

I’m Karen and this is my true story. When I
was 12 years old I went on a winter holiday
with my parents and my brother. We went to
a small village in Austria. It was in the middle
of the mountains and it was really beautiful.
There was a lot of snow and we went skiing
every day. It was great fun and I loved it!

On the last day of our holiday our parents
stayed at the hotel because they wanted to
pack the suitcases. I decided to go skiing with
my brother. The weather was quite bad that
morning. It was grey and cloudy and it was
snowing hard. We skied through a forest for
more than an hour and then we decided to
go back to the hotel.

We started skiing back to the village. It was
snowing very hard and it was difficult to see
the way in the snow. After an hour we were
still in the forest and we couldn’t see the
village. I was very scared and we were both
very cold. My brother used his mobile phone
to call our parents. We waited for half an
hour and then they found us. My dad was
quite angry. He said it was dangerous to ski in
the forest when the weather is bad. We went
back to the hotel and drank some hot tea.
I decided never to go skiing in bad weather
again!

Presenter
On Travelworld Today we’ve got

William Jones in the studio. He’s
from Britain, but he came back from
a skiing holiday in Kazakhstan last
week. William, when we think of
skiing holidays we usually think of
Switzerland, Italy or France. People
from Europe don’t usually think of
going to Kazakhstan to ski!

William

Exactly – people go to the same
places every year. Well, I wanted to go
somewhere new and exciting, so for
my winter holiday this year I decided
to go skiing in Kazakhstan.

Presenter Was the skiing good?
William

The skiing there was just fantastic!
Kazakhstan has a very long winter and
really good snow for skiing, and there
are a lot of mountains. It’s perfect!
I love skiing and this was my best
holiday.

Presenter Were there a lot of people?
William

Not at all. It was very quiet. But
Kazakhstan wants more visitors. It has
spent about €13 million building new
hotels and ski-lifts recently. It wants
more than one million people to go
skiing there each year.

Presenter How long does it take to get to

Kazakhstan?

William

Well, that’s the only problem. It takes
about eight hours by plane from the
UK and the flight is quite expensive.
But when you are in Kazakhstan,
hotels and restaurants are much
cheaper than they are in Europe. And
I think that you have a much better
time.

Presenter Sounds great! William, thanks for

coming in today.

William

Thank you. Bye.

Unit 7 Test A & B
Exercise 10
Ben

Hello, Cathy! Did you read the book I
gave you?

Cathy Future World? Yes. It was very interesting.

I like the idea that computers and robots
will do all our housework in the future.

Ben

Yes! Computers are important today and I
think that they will be in the future, too.
Factories will probably use more robots
in the future, but I don’t think people
will have them in their houses to do the
cooking and cleaning.

Cathy That’s a pity. I hate housework!
Ben

The book says that people will have more
free time in the future. What do you
think?

Cathy Well, I think people will do less work.

New technology means that we can do
things much faster than before.

Ben

Maybe, but new technology can mean
more work, too.

Cathy What do you mean?
Ben

Well, if there’s a new computer or robot,
someone has to programme it and
someone has to fix it when it goes wrong.

Cathy Yes, but people do these jobs already. I

think that in the future we will all work
less than we do now. Machines will do
everything. We can have longer holidays
and spend more time travelling, meeting
friends and doing sport.

Ben

I hope you’re right. But you’re only
thinking of the good things. More
technology will bring problems, too. If
robots do all the work, there won’t be
jobs for everyone.

Cathy You’re so pessimistic, Ben. We’re lucky

that technology is getting so much
better. It will have more advantages than
disadvantages.

Ben

Well, I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

Unit 8 Test A & B
Exercise 10
Becky
I know you love travelling, Joe. So what’s

your dream trip?

Joe

Well, my dream is to travel around the
world in 80 days. And one day

I’m

going to do it!

Becky And where are you going to go?
Joe

First I’m going to fly to America, hire a car
and drive right across the whole country.
I’m going to start on the east coast, drive
past the Mississippi River and then travel
to the Grand Canyon.

Becky And then?
Joe

I’m going to fly to Hawaii and do some
surfing before I go to New Zealand and
Australia.

Becky What are you going to do there?
Joe

In Australia I’m going to do scuba diving!
And I’m going to see the Great Barrier
Reef.

Becky That sounds fantastic!
Joe

Yes, it’s going to be great! Now it’s your
turn. Imagine your perfect trip. What are
you going to do?

Becky Hmm. I’m going to travel across Europe

first, probably by train – I like trains – and
then I’m going to go to Egypt. I want to
see the pyramids.

Joe

And after that?

Becky I’m going to go to India – I love Indian

food, especially curry! Then, after India
I’m going to travel to Thailand.

Joe

And where are you going to go next?

Becky Probably to Australia. I can meet you

there!

Joe

Yes! And you can tell me all about the
places you went to and I can visit them on
my way back to England.

Becky And I can learn all about America from

you and travel there later.

Joe

Brilliant! See you in Australia, then!

Becky Yes, one day!

Interviewer
Good evening and welcome to

Survival Special, the programme
that goes to some of the most
dangerous places on Earth. On the
programme tonight we are very
fortunate to have the explorer and
adventurer, Jack Kelly.

Jack

Hello!

Interviewer Jack, tell us about your latest

adventure. You’ve just come back
from South America, is that right?

Jack

Yes, that’s right. I’ve been on an
expedition to the River Amazon in
Brazil with three other adventurers.
We were looking for evidence of
lost civilizations in the rainforest
near the border with Peru, about
2,000 kilometres north-west of
Brasilia.

Interviewer Wow! What did you find?
Jack

Well, first of all we didn’t find
anything. We travelled by canoe
for more than a month through the
rainforest. And then suddenly we
found the ruins of an old city.

Interviewer Were there any people there?
Jack

No. We didn’t see anyone for
hundreds of kilometres. No one
lives there. It’s a long, long way
from civilization.

Interviewer Jack, you’ve been to a lot of

interesting places. Can you tell us
about some of them?

Jack

Hmm, where should I start? Well,
I’ve been to Antarctica. That was
fantastic. It was really beautiful
but freezing cold! Most days it was
minus 40 degrees and it was also
very windy. I’ve also been to Alaska,
where I walked from the north
coast across the mountains to the
south coast. And I’ve travelled by
canoe 1,500 kilometres down the
Mississippi River in America.

Interviewer Where are you planning to go next?
Jack

Next month I’m going to go to
Australia. I’m going to cycle across
the desert from Perth on the west
coast to Sydney on the east coast.

Interviewer Incredible! How far is that?
Jack

4,000 kilometres.

Interviewer 4,000 kilometres? How long …

Exercise 15
Jamie
How often do you go to the supermarket,

Aisha?

Aisha Once a week, usually. I go on Friday

nights after work. What about you?

Jamie I usually go on Saturday mornings, but it’s

very busy then. There are always a lot of
people. It’s awful!

Aisha Yeah. That’s why I do my shopping on

Friday nights. Do you buy organic food?

Jamie No, never. It’s too expensive. And it tastes

the same as ordinary food.

Aisha Oh, Jamie, that isn’t true! Organic food

tastes much better. Think about ordinary
supermarket tomatoes. They aren’t very
nice but organic tomatoes taste great.

Jamie Mmm. I’m not sure. Do you always go to

the same supermarket?

Aisha Yes, usually. There’s one near my house. It

takes about ten minutes on foot.

Jamie There are three supermarkets close to my

house, but I don’t do all my shopping at
supermarkets. I use small shops in town,
too.

Aisha There aren’t any small shops where I live.

There’s a department store, a cinema and
the supermarket. That’s all.

Jamie That’s a pity. I like small shops because

the assistants always talk to me. In the
newsagent’s the shop assistants know my
name. We have chats about the weather
or sport.

Aisha How nice! Well, the people in the

supermarket don’t know my name but
that isn’t a problem. They’re always
friendly.

Revision 2 (Units 4-6) Test A & B
Exercise 14
Tim

I didn’t see you at the party on Friday,
Dawn.

Dawn No. I went to the cinema to see the new

horror film, Evil Aliens.

Tim

Was it good?

Dawn Oh yes, it was great!
Tim

But, Dawn, you’re only 14. You aren’t old
enough to see a horror film.

Dawn You’re wrong! It was my birthday last

week. Evil Aliens has a 15 certificate, so
now I’m old enough to watch it.

Tim

But horror films are for boys, not girls.

Dawn I don’t think so! There were a lot of girls

in the cinema when I saw it. They loved it
and they didn’t scream. Well, not much.

Tim

But what about the violence?

Dawn I didn’t think it was violent. Everyone

knows that what they’re seeing isn’t real.
We see worse things on TV all the time.

Tim

What do you mean?

Dawn Well, I think the news is more frightening

than a horror film because it’s real.

Tim

What? Do you really think the news is
more violent than a horror film?

Dawn Of course. Some of the things I see on the

news are terrible – and no one’s acting!
It’s all happening in the world.

Tim

I agree. But some films and video games
are violent.

Dawn Maybe, but not this one.
Tim

So you weren’t frightened?

Dawn No. I think old horror films are more

frightening than new ones. Evil Aliens
was quite funny.

Tim

So your parents think it’s OK for you to
watch horror films?

Dawn My mum thinks it’s OK. She watched Evil

Aliens with me. But we didn’t tell my dad!
We said we saw a comedy!

Tim

Dawn!

Revision 3 (Units 7-9) Test A & B
Exercise 15

There’s good news for people who like
driving but don’t want to harm the
environment. A new type of environmentally
friendly car is here. A British team built the
car and they hope that it will break the world
record for fuel efficiency at the Shell Eco
Marathon.

The new car doesn’t use petrol or diesel. It
runs on hydrogen and electricity. But it isn’t
very fast. The top speed is only 48 kilometres
per hour. So it won’t win the Grand Prix!

Because it is made of carbon fibre and
aluminium, the car is very light. This means
that it only needs 25 watts of electricity to
drive around the world. That’s less electricity
than a light bulb!

Jack Dex, who is only 13 years old, will drive
the car. Like the car, he’s small and light and
he is also an experienced go-kart driver.
A team from Switzerland holds the world
record. Their car also uses hydrogen. But Jack
thinks that he can beat them.

Conversation 1
Aaron
What do you want to be when you leave

school, Liam?

Liam

I don’t know really. I’d like to join the
army and be a soldier, I think.

Aaron That sounds dangerous to me!
Liam

Yes, sometimes. But it’s also very exciting.
What about you, Aaron? I know you like
acting.

Aaron Oh, that’s just a hobby. I want to be a

doctor.

Liam

Wow! That will be interesting, but you’ll
have to do a lot of work. My uncle’s a
doctor and he’s always busy.

Aaron Well, I don’t mind hard work. If my job’s

interesting, I’ll be happy.

Millie
Are you going anywhere interesting on

holiday this year, Reece?

Reece Yes, I’m going to Iceland with my mum

and dad.

Millie Iceland! Why are you going there?
Reece Well, my mum is from Iceland originally.

But it will be my first visit – and my dad’s.

Millie How exciting! Have a great time and let

me know what it’s like.

Reece Yes, of course. I’ll send you a postcard,

Millie.

Conversation 3
Harry
The Discoverers is on tonight, Kat. Are

you going to watch it?

Kat

No. Actually, we haven’t got a TV at
home.

Harry You’re joking! Why not?
Kat

My parents say that TV stops children
talking to each other or to their parents.
They say children should spend their time
doing better things like reading books.

Harry What do you think about that?
Kat

I hate it. My friends talk about TV
programmes and I don’t know them.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong
with TV. It’s good entertainment. And
programmes can give you a lot of
information about things, too.

Harry Well, do you want to come round to my

house to watch The Discoverers tonight?

Kat

Thanks. I’d love to!
