Origin

Anterior fibers: external surfaces of ribs 5-
8, interdigitating with serratus anterior;
fibers travel medial and downward to the
insertion.
Lateral fibers: external surface of 9th rib,
interdigitating with serratus anterior;
external surfaces of 10-12th ribs,
interdigitating with latissimus dorsi. Fibers
extend downward and medially toward the
insertion.

Insertion

Anterior fibers: broad, flat aponeurosis,
ending in the linea alba
Lateral fibers: as the inguinal ligament,
into anterior superior iliac spine, pubic
tubercle, and into the external lip of
anterior 1/2 of iliac crest

Actions

Acting bilaterally, spinal flexion to
approximate pelvis and thorax. The
anterior fibers support and compress the
abdominal viscera, depress the thorax,
and assist in respiration. The lateral fibers
also exert a large influence on the lumbar
spine to tilt the pelvis posteriorly.
Acting unilaterally, with the anterior fibers
of the internal oblique of the opposite side
to rotate the trunk to the opposite side
when pelvis is fixed; The lateral fibers also
act with the lateral fibers of the internal
oblique on the same side to laterally flex
(sidebend) to the same side.

Nerve

Anterior primary rami of the 7th through
12th thoracic vertebrae
