The Eiffel Tower was built for the International
Exhibition held in Paris to celebrate the 100th
anniversary of the French Revolution. The tower
was under construction from 1887 through 1889.
This huge tower, originally 300 meters (984 feet)
tall, was built in the era just before the dawn of
the 20th century, and is truly a monument to the
opening of the "steel age." The name of the
tower comes from its designer, Gustave Eiffel.
