The black woodpecker is the largest woodpecker
found in Japan. It inhabits Hokkaido and the northern
parts of Honshu. This woodpecker is about the size of
a crow. The top of its head is a bright red color, and its
eyes are ringed with gold and green. To avoid its
natural enemies, the black woodpecker builds its nest
and raises its young in the Japanese beech tree,
which has a smooth trunk and no low branches. The
black woodpecker is designated as a national
treasure, and is considered an endangered species.
