A Day in Barcelona
1
If you only have one day to spend in Barcelona, you have
to start in the oldest part, known as the Old City, to see
Barcelona’s most famous historic monuments, narrow
streets, lovely atmospheric bookshops and restaurants. If
you wander through the ancient old streets, you will come
to the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia, which dates back to the
13th century. Next you should visit the Palau Reial Major
– the palace where the Catalan kings lived. From there
you can go to see the Esgl`
esia de Santa Maria del Mar –
the most beautiful Gothic church in Barcelona.

Not far from the church, at the Museo Picasso, is one of
the biggest collections of artworks by the Spanish artist.
The museum opened in 1963 with a collection of paintings
which Picasso had given to his friend Jaime Sabartés. The
friend wanted to open a museum in Malaga, where Picasso
was born, but the artist himself chose Barcelona. The
collection began with 574 works, but now there are about
1000 works, many of which were given to the museum by
the artist himself.
3
Lovers of architecture must see the magnificent building
of the Sagrada Familia, a church designed by Antoni
Gaudí. Though the artist died in 1926, the famous
building is not finished yet. Gaudí’s work was initially
heavily influenced by the Gothic style. People from all
over the world come to see other examples of Gaudí’s
work, such as La Pedrera or Casa Batllò. A very special
place to go is Park Güell with a world famous colourful
mosaic of a dragon. The park, together with other works
by Gaudí, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You cannot go home without a souvenir from Barcelona,
and the best place to buy one is Las Ramblas, which
is a network of narrow streets, full of little shops and
cafés. While you walk around, you can see lots of live
performances and shows. If you get to the Rambla de
Mar and you walk to the end, you will see the port of
Barcelona with a giant figure of Columbus looking out
towards the Mediterranean Sea.

Hi Alice
I’m really happy that you can come. I hope
you’ll enjoy the concert. One thing I’d like
to ask you. Could you bring the biology
notes with you? I’ve lost mine and there’s a
test next week. Can I borrow your notes for
a few days? That would be great!
