The closest member of my family You are going to tell your partner about the closest member of your family. Here are some tips to talk about. Prepare one minute speech at least. Who is your closest member of your family? Can you give any personal details? (name, age, study/job, …) Can you describe him/her? (appearance) What do you like about him/her? What subject do you think is the most important for you and why? Is there any subject you would like to study at your school? How many lessons a day would be fair for you? Are you a good student? Would you like to go to university? …?

My childhood You are going to tell your partner about your childhood. Here are some tips to talk about. Prepare one minute speech at least. When and where were you born? Did you go to nursery school? What is the first moment of your childhood you remember? How did you spend summer holiday as a child? Did you have any household duties? Were you a good boy/girl? Did you like to go to primary school? Are you still in touch with your friends from childhood? Is there any food or meal you didn't eat? What job did you want to do? …?

Seasons of the year You are going to tell your partner about seasons of the year. Here are some tips to talk about. Prepare one minute speech at least. What type of weather do you like the most? Why? What type of weather don't you like and why? Do you watch weather forecast? Do you believe in it? Do you like changing of four seasons in our country? What is the typical weather for each season? Does bad/good weather influence your mood? What kind of weather would be perfect for you on your holiday? …?

My future plans You are going to tell your partner about your future plans. Here are some tips to talk about. Prepare one minute speech at least. What job did you want to do when you were a child? What kind of work is interesting for you now? How would you describe a perfect job? Would you like to study at university or would you like to start working after secondary school? Are your parents' jobs an inspiration for you? If you should choose - a well-paid but boring job or lower salary but interesting work - what would you choose? What about marriage and relationships? Would you prefer living in a flat or in a house? Why? Is there anything really special you would like to achieve? …?

My typical day and weekend You are going to tell your partner about your typical day and weekend. Here are some tips to talk about. Prepare one minute speech at least. What day of the week is the best/worst for you? Why? Can you describe your typical weekday? Is there any typical weekend activity? Do you have any regular duties during the week? (except going to school) Are you a heavy sleeper or an early riser? It is Saturday and you should choose - a trip to the mountains or watching your favourite films - what would you choose? Why? How would you like to spend an ideal day? …?

How to use this material:

• before the lesson cut up the chart with topics and cards with questions - it is better to have these cards with the questions twice - each student in a pair has his/her own card

• at the beginning of the lessons divide the students into pairs - put the cards with the topics face down and all students take one card and they find his/her partner with the same topic

• into each pair give the card (or the cards) with their topic and the students individually prepare their speech

• the students listen to each other carefully, they can ask some additional questions; the speech must be one minute long at least (the more, the better)

• after the students finish speaking, they make quick notes about their partners

• then students find a new partner (whoever they want) and they tell each other about their previous partners (according the notes they have made)

Extra tip

• you can set the topics as homework and at the beginning of each lesson is one chosen student talking in front of the classmates (good speaking exercise)
