TIMMY GOES SHOPPING

AGE GROUP: 5th, 6th grade of primary school
TIME: 45 minutes
AIMS: listening for detail, the language of shops and shopping, to give passive exposure to verbs in the past simple tense, to relate speech to pictures.
ASSUMPTIONS: It's not the first lesson about food. They know the names of food and the names of shops where we can buy it.
MATERIALS: whiteboard, magnets, text of the story, handouts, pictures of food, pictures of shops
PROCEDURE:
Revise the vocabulary items from the previous lesson. Stick the names of shops to the board and elicit where we can buy particular food items.
Pre-teach the word “shopping list”. Ask If the students use it when they go shopping.
Draw a shopping list on the board. Ask students what they would like to buy. Collect the ideas.
Introduce Timmy. Create a background for the story.
Tell the story. Printout 1.
Ask If the mother was happy with Timmy's shopping and what was on his list.
Distribute the handout with 4 baskets. Ask which basket belonged to Timmy when he got back home. Retell the story and ask once again. Printout 2.
Distribute the Printout 3. Ask students to complete the story.
Optional activity: ask students to act the story out. Teacher should read the text.
