My name's Margaret Jameson and I m an accountant. I work in London in one of the accountancy
firms. We examine financial records or accounts of many companies. We work with the accountants of
those companies, and the people who work under them: the bookkeepers. I like my profession:
accountancy.
Sometimes our company acts as an auditor: specialists outside accountants who audit a company's
accounts, that is we check them at the end of a particular period to see if they give a true and fair
view(an accurate and complete picture).An audit can take several days, even for a fairly small
company.
When a company's results are presented in a way that makes them look better than they really are,
even if it follows the rules, the firm may be accused of creative accounting or window dressing.
Results for a particular period are shown in the company's annual report. One of its parts is a profit and
loss account.
If a company makes more money than it spends, it makes a profit. If not, it makes a loss. A profit
before tax and other deductions is called gross profit. A profit after deducting these costs is net profit.
The final figure for profit or loss is called informally a bottom line.
Another part of an annual report is a balance sheet. It gives a picture of a company's assets and
liabilities at the end of a particular period, usually a 12-month period of its financial year. Liabilities are
the company's debts to suppliers, lenders, the tax authorities etc. Assets are all things that the company
owns and that have value or power to earn money.
