DINOSAURS
Many years ago there were dinosaurs everywhere on earth. Then they died, disappeared and vanished from the face of our planet.
The dinosaurs were the biggest animals that ever walked on earth. Brachiosaurus, for example, weighted about 78 tonnes, was 23 metres long, and as tall as a four-storey building or a large oak tree. But some dinosaurs were even bigger than that. About thirty years ago palaeontologists found the bones of Supersaurus, which was 30 per cent bigger and heavier than Brachiosaurus. The weighted as much as 20 elephants. Most of these huge dinosaurs were herbivores.
Not all of the dinosaurs were big. Compsognathus was only as big as a chicken, and it was a carnivore. The smaller dinosaurs could move very quickly. Hypsilophodon could run as fast as a racehorse, but used its back legs only. /based on Grapevine Workbook 2B; Oxford University Press/ |
