Pattern Instructions
Tab Start for shawl: Use the following 3 steps or your own preferred tab method to end up
with 9 stitches ready for a right side row:
1) Cast on 3 stitches and knit 6 rows.
2) Pick up and knit 3 stitches along garter stitch edge and 3 stitches from cast on edge. 9
stitches on needle.
3) K3, P3, K3.
Three of the stitches on each side are for a garter stitch border. The central stitch is the spine
stitch that will run down the middle of the shawl. The 2 remaining stitches are the first stitch
in each half of the body. Only the right side (RS) body stitches are charted. Begin knitting
from Chart 1 as follows:
Odd Rows (RS): K3, yo,
<knit chart row>, yo, K1, yo, <knit chart row>, yo, K3
Even Rows (WS): K3, purl to last 3 stitches, K3
To help remember the right side row increases, you may wish to use stitch markers to mark
the border and spine stitches.
Chart 2: After Row 50, begin Chart 2 as described for Chart 1. Note that the last WS row of
Chart 2 will be different if you are knitting the large size.
*Large shawl only*: Chart 2 will be knit twice, so DO NOT knit row 122 the first time
through the chart. Treat it as a normal WS row. To repeat Chart 2, treat the “K33” as “K33,
yo, S2K1P, yo, K33, yo, S2K1P, yo, K33”.
Garter and eyelet division:
The following 2 rows finish the garter and lace division between Chart 2 and the border:
Row 123: (RS): K3, yo, K1, (yo, K2tog) until spine stitch, yo, K1, yo, (K2tog, yo) to last 4
stitches, K1, yo, K3
Row 124: (WS): Knit all stitches
Border: After the eyelet and garter rows, knit from the Border Chart as for the previous
charts. NOTE: last WS row of the border is a knit row, beginning the garter edging.
Garter edging: Do 5 or 7 rows of garter stitch as follows:
RS: K3, yo, Knit to spine stitch, yo, K1, yo, Knit to last 3 st, yo, K3
WS: Knit
Bind off loosely. Block and weave in ends.
