Lead-in activities
This should be aimed at generating awareness and encouraging reflection on issues which will help the students to respond to the
text. One way to do this would be to ask the students to think about what they like about living in Poland (in other words, what
they might miss if they were to leave). Alternatively, you could ask them to brainstorm differences between the UK and Poland,
giving them topic headings as a guide (food, sport, transport, people etc.). Of course, if any of the students have personal
experience then this would be very helpful.
Discussion
The students can discuss the questions in small groups, where feasible. It would be a good idea to elicit their ideas for the second
question onto the board so the group has a common reading task; it will also give you the chance to input some vocabulary if you
think your students need it.
Organising the text
Key:
1. The great travellers
2. Poles in the UK and Ireland
3. The good, the bad and...
4. Can you speak English? Can you speak Polish?
5. How does Ponglish sound?

Try to get the students to explain their choices in feedback, highlighting the connections in the text.

Translation
This is really a chance for the students to have fun with the language. Make sure they translate the examples into both English and
(correct) Polish before they try to come up with more examples. If the class is very creative they could attempt a Ponglish dialo-
gue.
