AS IF + PRESENT SIMPLE = true, AS IF + PAST SIMPLE = false

The past subjunctive after as if / as though indicates an unreal situation in the present. However, if the situation is true, we
use a real tense expressing present time:
He looks as if he knew the answer. (he gives the impression that he knows the answer, but he doesn't know, probably doesn't know
or we don't know whether he knows or not)
He looks as if he knows the answer. (he probably knows the answer)

Present Simple => Past Simple = Unreal Present Past Simple => Past Simple (no change)
He looks as if he knew the answer. (he doesn’t know it)
He looked as if he knew the answer. (we don’t know whether he knew it or not => context

Consequently, the meaning of this sentence can only be deduced from the context.

The past perfect subjunctive after as if / as though is used to refer to an unreal past situation. If the situation is true, we use a real
tense expressing past time:
He seems as if he hadn’t slept for days. (it seems that he hasn't slept for days, but he has, he probably has or we don't know if he
has or not)
He seems as if he hasn't slept for days. (he hasn't slept for days)
He talks about Rome as though he had been there himself. (but he hasn’t)
He behaves as if he owned the place. (but he doesn’t own)
He talks as though he knew where she was. (but he doesn’t know)
He orders me about as if I were his wife. (but I am not)

It looked as though an agreement had been reached yesterday between the two sides. (it wasn’t reached)
(but there was no agreement or we don’t know whether there was an agreement or not)

It looks as though an agreement was reached yesterday between the two sides. (it probably was)
(Was would be the incorrect tense to use in this situation since this is a subjunctive mood and not an indicative mood.)

The question here is what attitude, state of mind or intent did the speaker want to convey? In the given sentence, if you think the
speaker meant to express doubt about the success of the negotiation, then the correct tense to use would be the past perfect to
indicate an unreal situation in the past.

1. You must help us before it is too late. 2. I don’t want you to help me write it.
3. It’s a pity you didn’t help us before it was too late. 4. I must finish my homework now, there’s not much time left.
5. Please stop borrowing my stuff without even asking me. 6. I think drinking green coffee is healthier than the black one.
