Rear Suspension - Grand Caravan, Town & Country

DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION

Fig. 1: Identifying Rear Suspension Components
Courtesy of CHRYSLER LLC

The rear suspension design used on this vehicle is a twist beam trailing axle type with vertically mounted coil
springs.

The rear suspension consists of these major components:

Axle (3)

Coil spring (2 per vehicle) (1)

Hub and bearing (2 per vehicle)

Jounce bumper (2 per vehicle)

Shock absorber (2 per vehicle) (4)

Track bar (2)

The rear axle has a tubular torsion tube running through the center of its width. It also has two trailing arms, one
extending from each end of the axle forward. Each trailing arm has a rubber pivot bushing pressed into it. The
bushings can be serviced separately.

The springs used on the rear suspension are the coil type. They are mounted straight above the rear axle beam in

INSPECTION

INSPECTION

Verify proper torque of all axle fasteners.

Inspect the axle looking for damage or bending. If damage is evident, the axle must be replaced.

Inspect for broken or cracked welds at each end of the twist beam within the axle. Inspect for broken or cracked
welds at each axle trailing arm bushing bore. If a problem is present, the axle must be replaced.

Inspect the bushings at the leading ends of the axle trailing arms. Look for damage or deterioration of the
bushings. Make sure the bushings are centered side-to-side in their bore. If a problem exists, the bushings must
be replaced. They can be replaced separately from the axle.

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION

1. Center the axle beam on a transmission jack or equivalent standing at axle removal height.

HUB AND BEARING

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

HUB AND BEARING

The following procedure may be used for diagnosing the condition of the wheel bearing and hub.

1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly, disc brake caliper and brake rotor. Refer to

Brakes/Hydraulic/Mechanical/ROTOR, Brake - Removal .

2. Rotate the wheel hub checking for resistance or roughness.

NOTE:

The wheel bearing is designed to last for the life of the vehicle and requires no
type of periodic maintenance.

Any roughness or resistance to rotation may indicate dirt intrusion or a failed hub bearing. If the bearing
exhibits any of these conditions, the hub and bearing will require replacement. Do not attempt to disassemble
the bearing for repair. If the wheel bearing is disassembled for any reason, it must be replaced.

Damaged bearing seals and the resulting excessive grease loss may also require bearing replacement. Moderate
grease weepage from the bearing is considered normal and should not require replacement of the wheel bearing.

To diagnose a bent hub, measure hub runout. Refer to Brakes/Hydraulic/Mechanical/ROTOR, Brake -
Diagnosis and Testing
 .

REMOVAL

REMOVAL

SHOCK ABSORBER, SUSPENSION

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

SHOCK ABSORBER

Inspect the shock absorber for damage and evidence of fluid running from the upper end of the fluid reservoir.
(Actual leakage will be a stream of fluid running down the side of the reservoir tube and dripping off lower end
of unit). A slight amount of seepage between the shaft and shaft seal is not unusual and does not affect
performance of the shock absorber.

REMOVAL

REMOVAL

1. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Quick Reference/Hoisting - Standard Procedure .

2. Position transmission jack or equivalent under axle near shock absorber to be serviced, raising it enough

to support axle.

Fig. 53: Removing/Installing Rear Shock Absorber
Courtesy of CHRYSLER LLC

3. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt (4) and nut (3) at axle.

4. Remove the shock absorber upper mounting bolt (2) and nut (1) at body bracket, then remove shock

absorber (5) from vehicle.

NOTE:

Before proceeding, see Rear Suspension - Warning.
