Wstęp

1. Co zawiera niniejszy podręcznik?

Podręcznik zawiera: ćwiczenia słownictwa i gramatyki angielskiej w formie ćwiczeń

Jest on

podręcznik przygotowujący do egzaminów wszelkiego typu obejmujących poziom B1 i B2
(TEFL, Cambridge First Certificate, itp. itd.).

samodzielnej?

Podręcznik English Day By Day zawiera klucz, zatem nadaje się on zarówno do pracy

i przerabiamy je. Kolejność rozwiązywania ćwiczeń w podręczniku jest zatem całkowicie
dowolna.

w nauce słownictwa i gramatyki angielskiej.

XLIV. Celebrating Easter in England and Poland.

I. – do the cloze test on Easter in Poland.

new life and rebirth, Good Friday, Christian, lamb, breakfast, the Easter Bunny, Palm Sunday,
Jesus Christ, patterns, Easter, Resurrection, Lent, sprinkle, tomb, dyed eggs.

After 40 days of (1)……………… comes Easter. It begins with (2) ………………. when
people bring twigs with catkins (= bazie) to the church to have them blessed. Then, on (3)
…………….. people are supposed not to eat meat and generally fast which commemorates
the death of (4) …………. on the cross. After that, on Easter Saturday, people go to church to
bless (5) ……….. , bread, sausages, some sweets, salt and other food carried in wicker
baskets. The colourful, dyed eggs

the symbol of (6) …………. are decorated with different

(7) …………. and are called "pisanki" in Polish. On Easter Saturday, people also visit the
(8)…………. of Jesus. Tradition says that the tomb must be guarded by young boys or men
the whole night before Easter Sunday.

In general, the feast of (9) …………. is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first spring
full moon. On Easter Sunday morning, Christians take part in the procession around the
church and, what’s most important, they take part in the Holy Mass called the
(10)…………….. Christians also gather to have Easter (11) …………………….. at their
homes. By the breakfast table, each of the participants wishes the others of the family good
luck and happiness. They eat the blessed food from the church. There is also a sugar or butter
dish in the shape of a (12) ……………. on the table, in some houses in the centre of the table,
and it symbolises Our Saviour Jesus.
(13) ………… also belongs to the Easter tradition. Children believe that this bunny brings
them presents such as sweets or small chocolate eggs.
On Easter Monday, boys (14)………………. girls with water or some perfume. This tradition
is called "Śmingus dyngus" or “Śmigus Dyngus”. Some boys, however, seem to lack manners
on this day, because they do not only sprinkle girls, but they rapidly pour whole pails of water
onto them. This wild custom has nothing to do with the Easter fun, but it is a mere sign of
rudeness on the part of such boys. Such behaviour should be strongly condemned and strictly
penalised.
Summing up, Easter is the oldest and the most important (15)…………. holiday, but it
should be celebrated with care and with a moderate attitude by everyone, so as to avoid
unpleasant surprises such as overeating or being hit by plastic bags filled with water by
hooligans claiming to preserve the Easter tradition.
