Joanna fi rst started to think carefully about recycling when she saw a science programme on
TV. A scientist on the programme was talking about how many plastic carrier bags and bottles
we all use, and how important it is to recycle all our waste. Joanna immediately decided she
wanted to do something to help. So she spoke to her teachers at school. All the teachers and
students decided to start a big recycling project in all the classes to recycle all their waste. For
example, everything from school lunchboxes was collected: plastic drinks bottles, aluminium
cans and cardboard juice cartons. A lot of waste from school meals was composted, too, and
was used to grow vegetables. It all happened very quickly, so Joanna and her teachers were very
surprised and pleased! Joanna has been asked to write an article for the online school magazine
next month; of course, she’s said ‘Yes’!
