UnearthedArcana:TheRanger,
Revised
Overthepastyear,you’veseenustryanumberof
newapproachestotheranger,allaimedat
addressingtheclass’shighlevelsofplayer
dissatisfactionanditsrankingasD&D’sweakest
classbyasignificantmargin.
Thosetwofactorscombinedtoputusonthe
pathtothisrevision.Wehaveclassesthatrateas
weak,butwhichnonethelesshavehighlevelsof
playersatisfaction.Thattellsuspeopleplaying
thoseclassesarehappywithhowtheircharacters’
abilitiesworkandwiththeirownexperienceatthe
table,evenifthoseclassesaren’tthestrongest.
Afterall,noteveryclasscanrankatthetop.
Likewise,mostissuesweseewithclassesare
confinedtospecificabilitiesthatdon’tplayabig
roleindeterminingwhetherplayersliketheclass
asawhole.Inotherwords,noclassisperfect,but
eachiscloseenoughtothemarkinitsownway
thatplayersarehappy.
Assuch,theranger’sstatusasasorespotfor
playershasbeenacauseforconcernforawhile.
Andso,todaywepresentanewrevisionofthe
ranger.Thoughitretainsmanyoftheelementsof
theexistingclass,alothaschanged,soit’sbestto
simplydigintothenewmaterialtogetasenseof
howitfeels.ButwhatI’dliketoaddresshereis
howtheD&Dgamewillevolveinthefuture.
Anychangeasdramaticasrebuildingacharacter
classrequiresplanning,verification,andaclear,
easyimplementation.
Theplanningphasegoesbacktoourreviewof
playtestfeedback.Wereviewdataandread
anecdotesonReddit,forums,andsocialmedia.We
trytodecideifaddressingtheissueisworththe
potentialdisruptiontothegame.
Inthiscase,wefeltthatafewfactorscombined
topushforachange.Manyplayerswanttoplay
rangers,butfewwerehappywiththeclass,which
helditsplaceatthebottomofclasspower
rankingsbyasignificantmargin.Theclass’s
individualfeaturesalsofilledthetop-tenlistof
lowest-ratedindividualcharacterfeatures.
Withourcoursesetforarevision,we’vespent
thepastyearexperimentingandgathering
feedback.Webelievethatifsomethingdoesn’thit
themarkthefirsttime,weneedtotakeourtime
andmakesureourpathtoasolutionistheright
one.Soourtinkeringwiththerangerledushere,
tothislatestupdate.

useonlyoneortheother.Bothwillbelegalfor
D&DAdventurersLeagueplay,andplayersof
existingrangercharacterswillhavetheoptionto
swaptotherevisedversion.Asyou’llseeasyou
readfurther,theoriginalrangerandtherevised
classusealmostidenticalprogressiontables,even
ifthespecificsofsomefeaturesdiffer.Withalittle
workonourend,wecanensurethatanynew
rangeroptionsweprovideworkforbothclasses.
Overall,thisapproachcapturesourintent—fix
whatneedstobefixedwhenit’snecessarytodoso,
butinawaythatminimizesdisruptionand

levelsandincreaseyourproficiencybonus,remember
thatyourcompanion’sproficiencybonusimprovesas
well,andisappliedtothefollowingareas:ArmorClass,

WhyNoMultiattack?
Multiattackisausefuldesigntoolthatkeepsmonsters
simplefortheDM.Itprovidesaboostinoffense,but
thatboostismeanttomakeabeastthreateningforone
battle—anotionthatdoesn’tmeshwellwithabeast
intendedtofightwiththeparty,ratherthanagainstit.
ProjectMultiattackacrossanentireadventure,andan
animalcompanionrunstheriskofoutclassingthe
fightersandbarbariansintheparty.
Soinstoryterms,youranimalcompanionhastraded
insomeofitsferocity(intheformofMultiattack)for
betterawarenessandtheabilitytofightmore
effectivelyinconcertwithyou.
ExpandingCompanionOptions
Dependingonthenatureofyourcampaign,theDM
mightchoosetoexpandtheoptionsforyouranimal
companion.Asaruleofthumb,abeastcanserveasan
animalcompanionifitisMediumorsmaller,has15or
fewerhitpoints,andcannotdealmorethan8damage
