INTRODUCTION
One of the key factors of winning battles is your selection of forces, as you will not know the
scenario before hand, it is vital that you select a balanced force to cope with any contingency.
Heroes
Ideally you should not select more than 50% of the points on heroes; if you do then you could
find yourself heavily outnumbered and where the scenario dictates that killing a hero is not
crucial to winning the battle, you may find yourself getting caught up in meaningless fights
while your army gets decimated and you lose the battle. Also get him mounted so he can go
on the battlefield quickly where needed; whether to shut down an enemy hero or to escape off
table, a mounted hero can easily kill an enemy captain in one charge – very useful.
Archers
I personally like to have the full 33% quota of archers as they can be handy in all scenarios.
The Volley Fire rule now makes them even more effective as you can cover the entire
battlefield, great for picking of an injured hero truing to escape off table. What can be better
than archers at killing enemy models advancing on your fort or to remove models from enemy
held terrain pieces – they could win you the game.
Cavalry
Choose around half a dozen where possible; keep them as reserve and surgically strike where
they will be most effective, like punching a hole in the enemy lines for a quick exit from the
table or to run down lone models. They are also great in getting passenger models to terrain
pieces to win the battle.
Heavy Infantry
These are your High Elves, Dwarves, Uruk-hai and Men of Minas Tirith. These can take the
punishment archers dish out; quickly close with the enemy as soon as possibly protecting
lower Defence models behind.
Light Infantry
Try to keep these as a reserve to lap enemy flanks and to hold key terrain while the rest of
your force deals with the enemy.
CAMPAIGN ARMY RULES
Your army must include at least 1 hero per 250pts.
An army must not exceed 33% of models armed with bows or crossbows unless stated otherwise in
the army list.
All Good heroes (except Dwarves and Hobbits) may be given a horse using the standard horse profile
and costing 10 points.
Leaders: May lead troops of their own Race or the Race they are most associated with (i.e. Goblin
King leads Goblins, Saruman leads Uruk-Hai of the White Hand) instead of a Captain.
Heroes: May only lead troops of their own race instead of a Captain.
Allies: If any allies are used then a Hero of the same race must also be selected.
Angmar
A whisper on the wind, the cold touch of mist, the clinging fog of dawn, these are
the promises of Angmar. Long dead creatures stir in their barrows and walk once
more by the light of day. From the dark places of the world, caves and dungeons and
forests, creatures issue, drawn by the call of the dead, as long forgotten pacts of allegiance are
remembered. The promise of slaughter and conquest brings this army together to wage a
terrible and brutal war upon any who should stand in their way.
Players who stand with Angmar have access to a disparate choice of troop type from humble
goblins and Hill Men to the might of the Barrow-wights and Cave Trolls. This army will
nearly always outnumber its opponents and relies on weight of numbers to smother its foes.
The Wight’s power of Paralyse can render even the mightiest hero helpless; with this extra
power Angmar may stretch its influence over all of Middle Earth.

Erebor
Hammers ring out and the horns blow, Mithril is mined and great axes are forged
upon the blacksmith’s anvil: the dwarves are preparing for war! Under the Great
King Dain and Gimli son of Gloin the dwarves set out to meet their enemies. They
fight for wealth and glory, but they are true friends of the free peoples and a mighty army
indeed, and above all else one word is heard amongst these companies…..Moria!
As a Dwarven commander you have the advantage of the best-armoured troops in the game.
Their Mithril armour makes them all but impervious to all but the heaviest of blows. With
Dain and Gimli at your disposal you will have two truly magnificent fighters a match for the
trolls of Moria and perhaps even for the giant Olog-hai of Mordor. When the dwarves march
to war there are few who can stand against them!

Gondor
Long has Gondor protected the West from the brutality of Mordor, long have the
Stewards made watch and awaited the return of the king, long have they sought the
one thing that will give them the strength to stand before their enemies. Now
Gondor moves onto the offensive, the ring must be recovered or all hope is lost, the steward
cannot wait forever for this Aragorn son of Arathorn.
A truly superb army, Gondor will be a pleasure for all to play with (if not against!). With
some of the best heroes in the game they have many options available to them. The Rangers
add an extra element to their tactical selection and the release of more and more figures will
allow the Gondor player to watch his army grow and grow. Long has Gondor protected the
West from the brutality of Mordor, long have the Stewards made watch and awaited the return
of the king, long have they sought the one thing that will give them the strength to stand
before their enemies. Now Gondor moves onto the offensive, the ring must be recovered or all

You may spend up to 33% of the army points on Southern Fiefdom allies:

Isengard
All of Isengard is emptied; Saruman has bred an army to destroy the world of men.
The mighty Uruk Hai number in their thousands, who could stand against them, not
elves, not men, not even Mordor can match the speed and brutality of this gruesome
horde. Saruman watches through the Palantir, he knows all that his enemies plan, he will
destroy them all, and take the ring for himself.
The army of Isengard has long been a popular choice for gamers, and for obvious reasons.
Their high defence and strength value, pikes and crossbows, and of course the ever popular
berserkers, make them the match of any opponent on the battlefield. Add to this the awesome
abilities of Saruman the White and the malicious presence of Grima Wormtongue, and
Isengard may come out as the favourite to triumph in this campaign.

Lothlorien
Our time here is ending we must leave forever these lands and end our long exile,
the time of elves is at an end. But we will not abandon those who came after us, nor
leave them to the mercy of The Enemy. We will make one last war and terrible will
be the wrath of the Lady of Lothlorien!
Despite having the least troop choices of the allegiances Lothlorien will be a potent force
indeed in the Battle for Middle Earth. Galadriel and Celeborn are almost unstoppable
opponents, and protected by the valiant Haldir and the superb combat skills of all Wood Elves,
it will be a brave (or foolish) army that sets foot upon the Golden Wood.
Special Rules
Up to 50% of models may be bow armed.
The Mirror of Galadriel can only be used in Lothlorien.
Sentinels, Taurdirim – see UK WD 293 For a further 3 points may be equipped with an Elven
cloak.

Wood Elf Cavalry – take standard warrior cost and add 8pts for a horse.
The Woodland Realm
The peace-loving kingdom of Mirkwood has been thrown violently into the war for
Middle Earth. Once stirred this Elven Kingdom is amongst the mightiest of all
armies. Thranduil the King of Mirkwood is a fearsome magician and the Elven
Prince Legolas amongst the greatest warriors of the land. The Istari Radagast the Brown also
makes Mirkwood his home and all birds and beast rally to his call, even the great Eagles
themselves!
Following the allegiance of Mirkwood you will have the chance to pay with some of the most
diverse and memorable characters from the Lord of the Rings. The wood elves themselves are
a great army, and defending their own tree-lined borders will be very hard to defeat. The
addition of Radagast and Gwaihir gives you some very powerful options, and the opportunity
to use human allies means you needn’t worry too much about being heavily outnumbered.
These will be a potent force indeed in the Battle for Middle Earth.
Special rules
Up to 50% of Wood Elf models may be bow armed.
See UK WD293 for additional Elven warriors.

Mordor
The Eye has opened Sauron once more seeks the one thing he requires for total
power. Orcs pour forth, evil men from the South and East rally to the banner of
Mordor, and clad in the black garb of night the Nazgûl, most powerful of Sauron’s
lieutenants, have reformed more powerful than ever to lead the forces of the Dark Lord into
the free lands of the West.
As a member of the allegiance of Mordor you have access to a huge array of troop types from
simple Orcs and men to the Dark Lord himself. With the release of Return of the King there
has never been a better opportunity to build a vast army of Orcs and evil men. An added
bonus is that with the release of more and more models you have ever greater access to troop
types. Allying yourself with Mordor could be a shrewd move in the Battle for Middle Earth.

Moria
DOOM, DOOM, DOOM! Drums in the deep resound throughout the ancient halls
of Moria. A screech, a shout, and the Goblins surge from the dark of their home.
Thousands upon thousands, their numbers are unknown, and they are not alone!
Huge chain wielding trolls join them wishing only to feed on the flesh of dwarf, and man, and
elf. And there is something else, something old, a glimpse of shadow, the flicker of flame;
something old and terrible has awoken.
The goblins have been a popular army choice since the first game, and for obvious reasons.
Their sheer numbers combined with the might of the trolls make them truly fearsome. Added
now to this are the Shadow and Flame options for the drums and Shaman, keeping them alive
longer and longer. For their more serious encounters they can even rely on the Balrog itself,
and who then will stand against them?
Leaders
Balrog – may only be used in an army of at least 750 points. Counts as 3 Heroes
Goblin King
Heroes
Goblin Shaman
Captains
Goblin Captain
Warriors
Great Goblin Guard – up to 6 Mordor Uruks may be selected if lead by The Goblin King and
use the guard rule.
Goblin Drum

Cave Trolls
Wolf Riders – use goblin profile and add 5pts for the Warg. Spears will count as throwing
spears.
Rivendell
The Last Homely House, Rivendell on the edge of the Misty Mountains has long
been a place of rest and recovery for travellers on their dangerous journeys through
Middle Earth. Now Elrond lord of Rivendell will watch no longer and garbed again
in his war-gear he sets out to conquer his enemy of Millennia. Accompanied by his sons and
daughter, Elrond’s forces are without equal in martial skill, not even the nine can stand
against them!
If you choose Rivendell as your allegiance for the campaign you have the choice to field the
most skilful warriors of the game. Elrond and his sons are awesome combatants and above all
else you may field Glorfindel mounted upon Asfaloth, perhaps even a match for Sauron
himself. Add to this the magical options of Arwen and you can field widely different but
equally effective forces in each of your battles, keeping your opponents guessing!
Leaders

Wood Elves - must be lead by a Wood Elf Captain if 12 or more are used.

They may also have a lance for 1pt (5pts for a captain) - don’t forget, if you do not buy an
Elven blade also then they suffer a -1 to win the fight when not charging!
High Elf cavalry may also have barding for their horses; this costs 2pts (5pts for a Captain)
and gives horses a D5.
Rohan
Where is the horse and the rider? Theoden has broken free of Grima’s web of deceit
and taking once more to his fabulous steed he musters all of Rohan for war. From
Edoras the Rohirrim ride out, hunting down Uruk Hai and Orc, at Helm’s Deep the
horn of Helm Hammerhand sounds and all of Rohan rallies to the call. Unmatched masters of
cavalry tactics the horse lords are ready to end their oppression forever.
If you like cavalry then look no further than allying yourself to Rohan. The standard Rider of
Rohan is probably the best basic troop type in the game. Add to this the options for Theoden,
Eomer, and Rohan Royal Guard and you have a truly awe inspiring troop selection. Perhaps
best of all is the option for Gamling with the Rohan Royal Standard; an infinite supply of
Might will keep your cavalry charging and the enemy in disarray!
Special Rules
Due to Rohan basically being alight skirmish force, up to 50% of Rohan models may be bow
armed.

Harad
The proud and warlike people of the Harad, in the south of Middle-earth. The
ancient enemies of Gondor, they allied with Sauron during the War of the Ring.
The doughty, dark-skinned Men of the southern regions of Middle-earth. The
Haradrim are a fierce and warlike race of common humans that inhabit the Harad
desert and the great city of Umbar. Haradrim-proper are tall and deeply-tanned,
and somewhat resemble the Rohirrim to the north. The Haradrim residents of Umbar are more
diverse--there have been many influxes of Numenorian, Gondorian, and other cultures
throughout time. The Haradrim use both horses and Mumakil in combat--the latter being
much feared. However the desert Haradrim are more warlike, more un der the shadow, and a
more hostile, and chaotic group then the Rohan.
Special Rules
Due to the way the Haradrim models have been produced and the way they fight as light
troops, up to 50% of the army may be bow armed.

Southern Fiefdoms
Long has Minas Tirith faced great evil at the hands of Mordor yet they are not
alone in the struggle, the outlying lands of Gondor (the Fiefdoms) are home to the
varying towns and villages to the south of Gondor that aid Minas Tirith and look
to their own borders to find evil stirring. The Fiefdoms themselves boast a wide
range of troops from all over the south of Gondor ranging from the valiant men of Dol
Amroth to the great bow skills shown in the Morhond Vale, the release of White Dwarf rules
now allows us to create armies for these great lands.
