Nowadays, the majority of people own a bike. They buy them to commute to work or school. Others
believe that cycling is the best way to keep fit, while teenagers use special bikes to perform complicated
tricks. The most persistent cyclists take part in different races with the hope of setting a world record.

However, a bicycle isn t a modern invention it s almost 200-years-old. At the beginning, bikes were made of wood and didn t have
pedals. Later on, the pedals appeared, but they were attached to the front wheel. There were different types of wheel and sizes. At first,
the front wheels were twice as big as the back ones!

The highest speed ever reached by a person cycling is over 130 km/h. Surprisingly, it wasn t achieved during a race but a special
experiment carried out in the USA by a Canadian cyclist Sam Whittingham. He also cycled the longest distance, over 90 kilometres, in
only one hour! This achievement was possible owing to a special model of bike.
