1 ____
Cheese-rolling is an annual event which takes place at Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester in England. The idea behind the festival is to race after cheese which is rolled from the top of the hill. The first person over the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese.
2 ____
For the great majority of people who have never taken part in the event, chasing the cheese seems an easy task. In fact, most competitors finish the race with numerous bruises, bumps, cuts, twisted ankles or even broken bones! It’s because the hill is very steep and has an uneven surface.
3 ____
All the victims of the hill (and the cheese!) can always count on rescue group help which is waiting for them at the bottom of the hill. There are paramedics and a few ambulances which help the competitors who need hospital treatment.
4 ____
And what are the competitors fighting and breaking their bones for? Double Gloucester! A very hard, 7-pound cheese in the shape of a round block, supplied every year by the same local cheesemaker – Diane Smart.
5 ____
Accurate information is hard to find, but most probably the first cheese-rolling event took place 200 years ago. It was also organized during the Second World War, but then the cheese was replaced by a wooden block because there wasn’t enough food available.
6 ____
2010 was the first year in the history of cheese-rolling when the event was officially banned due to safety concerns over the number of people participating in the race. But very soon a ‘Save the Cheese Roll’ campaign started and it is hoped that the cheese-rolling will be held again in 2011.
