After 5 years in power members of the “Military Junta" in Argentina, led by Lieutenant General
Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri, decided that it was necessary to stem the tide of discontent
spreading throughout the country. The solution they sought was a crusade that would unite the
nation under one common goal. On March 26th, 1982, they held a secret meeting to find a
solution to an international crisis at British Port Leith, where contracted Argentine workers had
raised their flag. Britain had reacted by sending a task force there to defend against impending
attack.

It was decided at this meeting that this would be the last dispute with Britain over the Falklands
and South Georgia. Invoking national pride and a “historical right" of sovereignty over the
islands, the Military Junta decided it was time to take them by force, no matter the consequences.
Therefore on March 31st “Operation Azul" began. It ended with the capture of Port Stanley on
April 2nd.

sea control with the Advanced and Carrier Battle Groups, carry out a landing from the
Amphibious Group ships, and then retake the islands.
Most relevant departures:"Hermes" and "Invincible" carriers sail from Portsmouth.
Three nuclear submarines:"Spartan","Splendid" and "Conqueror"

Cruiser Gral. Belgrano sunk!!!! Argentina argues that the Belgrano was outside the theatre of
operations when it was sunk and that the act violated wartime conventions set down in The
Hague in 1907. They claim that its "sole purpose was to frustrate peace negotiations carried forth
by the Peruvian President, Belaunde Terry". On the other hand, Britain maintains that it was on a
zigzag course and represented a potential threat to the Task Force dispatched to reclaim the
islands, which had been occupied by Argentine troops.

Shocking casualty!!!! Destroyer "Sheffield" sunk!!! An air-launched Exocet hit the Sheffield
square amidships, penetrating deep into the the electronic fire control room. It apparently failed to
explode but ignited everything around it - flames fuelled by the missiles own propellant. British
Newspapers wondered how could one of the Navy's newest ships, specifically built to defend
against missile attacks, be almost literally be caught napping.

WEEK 12 (June 14th - June 20th) - Historically, on June 14th, the large Argentine garrison in
Port Stanley is defeated, effectively ending the conflict. Although ordered by Galtieri that morning
to continue the fight, Menendez decides to negotiate, and a small British team led by Lt Col Rose
of the SAS helicopters in. A surrender document covering enemy forces both on West and East
Falkland is agreed at the end of the afternoon, and that evening, General Moore flies to Stanley
for the official signing. The Argentine commander Mario Menendez, agrees to "an unnegotiated
cease fire ... with no other condition than the deletion of the word unconditional" from the
surrender document which he signs. June 20th, Britain formally declares an end to hostilities.
