After 5 years in power members of the “Military Junta" in Argentina, led by Lieutenant General
Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri, decided that it was necessary to stem the tide of discontent
spreading throughout the country. The solution they sought was a crusade that would unite the
nation under one common goal. On March 26th, 1982, they held a secret meeting to find a
solution to an international crisis at British Port Leith, where contracted Argentine workers had
raised their flag. Britain had reacted by sending a task force there to defend against impending
attack.

It was decided at this meeting that this would be the last dispute with Britain over the Falklands
and South Georgia. Invoking national pride and a “historical right" of sovereignty over the
islands, the Military Junta decided it was time to take them by force, no matter the consequences.
Therefore on March 31st “Operation Azul" began. It ended with the capture of Port Stanley on
April 2nd.

Uproar the world round! While Argentina and other Latin American countries consider this action
to be merely revenge against the former colonial empires, Europe and the USA believe Argentina
to be the aggressor and solely responsible for military escalation. Britain convokes not only the
United Nations but NATO as well, in order to obtain every diplomatic endorsement necessary to
prepare for a counterattack. Meanwhile, Argentina calls upon the TIAR (Inter-American
Assistance Treaty), and it initially backs Argentinałs legal claim. However, the USA gives
priority to its NATO membership, proclaiming itself in favor of Great Britain. The lack of
American support puts an end to Argentine hopes for firm backing from the TIAR.

WEEK 1 (March 29th - April 4th) - Quite fortuitously, warships of the Royal Navy head
south. But even before the question of a Task Force arises, lone "Endurance" will need
replenishment, so on Monday, RFA "Fort Austin" under the command of the Fleet Commodore
sails from Gibraltar. Once the go ahead is given, next to leave on Thursday 1st April is nuclear
submarine "Spartan". Then on Friday an "Advanced Group" of ships starts to head for
Ascension. Included with Admiral Woodward's flagship, destroyer "Antrim" is sister ship
"Glamorgan", Type 42's "Coventry", "Glasgow" and "Sheffield", frigates "Arrow", "Brilliant",
"Plymouth". Two more nuclear submarines follow "Spartan" to the South Atlantic: "Splendid" and
"Conqueror". By the end of the week, the first special forces units must be on their way south or
about to leave.
