Step 1: With a medium sized pointed brush use yellow to paint a vertical line on the nose that has
a thin point at the bottom and more body at the top. Then paint a small upside-down tear shape
on top (for a head). Following the contours of the persons eyelid, paint the eyelid yellow then
paint a petal shape that cuts through the eyebrow and then from the tip bring it back down to the
corner of the eye. Bring the yellow out onto the nose from the corner of the eye in a line leaving
enough room for the blue line between the body and wing. Then paint a leaf shape under the eye
on the cheek diagonally. Repeat on other side.
Tip: Outline the shape before you colour them in.
Step 2: Next paint the blue outline by following the yellow shape you
have created. You can be creative here and extend the blue outline at
the points and curl them slightly if you wish. Repeat on other side.
When painting underneath the eye get the person to look up so their eye lashes aren't in the way.
It'll make it much easier to do!
Step 3: Now for the fun part, give your butterfly character by painting blue decorative dots on the
lower yellow wings. Then two blue dots for eyes, two curly lines for antennas and a small curved
blue line for a smile.

Step 4: Continue to paint the blue dots down the centre of the butterflys body (nose). Then with
yellow paint add a row of dots under the lower wings and around the butterflys antennas like in
the picture.
Step 5: You can then add more decorative dots if you wish such as yellow and blue dots under
and over the upper wings and across the nose.
And that's all there is to it! If you like, experiment with the design, make changes where
you want, add some different colours and most importantly have fun !!!

"What Type of Brushes You ll Need for Face Painting"
Because you ll be painting on skin, you ll definitely want brushes that are soft and that do not
scratch the skin. You ll also want a range of sizes and shapes depending on the types of designs
you ll be painting.
A brush comprises of three parts:
The Tuft of Hairs/Bristles: can be made of real hair or synthetic fibres
The Ferrule: the metal part that joins the tuft to the handle.
The Handle/Shaft: the part that you hold in your hand
Some popular brands of brushes that professional face painters use are: Da Vinci, Gold Taklon
and Raphael. Every brand of brushes has their own sizing system, so your best bet is to find a
shop where you can look at a range of different brushes in person, feel the texture and the weight
of the brushes. To begin with I suggest a thin brush for detail, a medium sized brush and a large
brush for larger areas.
"Where to Buy Face Painting Brushes"
Most face paint manufacturer s tend to make their own line of brushes (eg. Snazaroo, Paradise,
Kryolan etc), so when looking for face paint online, there s sure to be a link to a page that also

you think? See the list above for place to buy face paints, it s a great place to start!!
