Afternoon Delight
CAITLIN RICCI
"Do what I tell you and everything will be just fine."
Jenn rolled her eyes. Her girlfriend, Remi, had dropped
her voice a little but it was still her. And she was still four inches
shorter than Jenn which made her current action of trying to grab
her from behind a lost cause. Jenn tilted her head forward and
kissed the bare patch of Remi's wrist just in front of her face.
"You borrowed my perfume again," Jenn said. "And if you're
trying to strangle me you might want to put on your stripper
heels. You'll get more leverage that way as long as you manage
to keep your balance."
Remi giggled and dropped her arms to circle Jenn's
waist. "Your self-defense instructor said that you have to practice
your moves. I was there and I remember."
"Yeah, yeah," Jenn whined as she pulled Remi over to
their big leather couch. Really what was her girlfriend thinking?
There wasn't room to hide another person in their tiny apartment.
She sat down first and took Remi's wrists as she
straddled her lap. Remi was in her favorite lounge clothes, a
sports bra and a pair of gym shorts, which left plenty of her olive
skin for Jenn to drink up and enjoy. And she'd switched out her
navel piercing, this time going for a sparkly pink heart instead of
the basic silver ball she was sporting earlier. Remi giggled as

shiny. She wasn't giggling for much longer though as Jenn
worked her full lips lower over the band of Remi's shorts.
"Wait!" Remi squealed as she stumbled off the couch.
Jenn scowled. "What the hell, Rem?"
Her girlfriend gave her a teasing smile. "I want to seduce
you."
Jenn laughed and reached for her but Remi quickly
danced out of her grasp. "You seduce me just by breathing. Now
get that cute butt back over here."
"You know how I've been taking belly dancing classes
right?" Remi asked. Of course Jenn knew. She'd had to leave the
first few times to keep from jumping her girlfriend in the locker
room. "Well, we learned a new thing today."
Jenn's eyes went wide. This was about to get really
interesting and from the flare of Remi's eyes, she knew it too.
Jenn leaned back on the couch, forcing her hands into fists to
keep from reaching for her as Remi began stretching just in front
of her knees.
After one ridiculously loud pop of her shoulder, Remi
turned toward her and began moving her arms in a waving
pattern that, while difficult, looked smooth. Remi had obviously
been practicing. "These are called Snake Arms," Remi explained.
Jenn smiled at her, encouraging her to show off as much
or as little as she wanted to. She knew that Remi was self-
conscious, especially when she was trying something new.
Remi's lips were moving but she wasn't saying anything as she

closed her eyes and turned in a tight circle, tapping her toes as
she shook her hips. "What are you saying?" Jenn asked her.
Remi turned and opened her eyes. "Up, out, down, in,
across. It's for my hips." She blushed. "I'm not that good yet."
This time Jenn did reach for her, quickly pulling Remi
onto her lap. "You are doing really well. You started, what? Two
weeks ago? Maybe? And you've got that wavy arm thing done
pretty well."
Remi grinned at her. "You're just saying that because
you don't know what it's supposed to look like. And because you
love me."
"It's still true," Jenn said adamantly.
Remi kissed her. "I love you too, Jenn."

How It Really Is
SILVIA VIOLET
I was leaning against the fence, watching one of my
favorite mares and her new colt frisking in the pasture when the
sound of tires on gravel drew my attention to the driveway. I was
startled to see my friend Cade driving up in his little hybrid.
What was he doing here? He ought to be at work.
Cade and I had been friends in high school, but we'd
drifted apart after graduation. When he'd moved back to town a
few months ago, taking a job as a loan officer at a local credit
union so he could care for his ailing grandfather, he'd called me
up. We'd started getting together every once in a while for a beer
or even for dinner.
I'd been up front with him. I told him I was gay the first
time we saw each other, not wanting to have him find out later
and decide he'd rather not associate with me like so many of my
friends had after I came out. He didn't seem surprised. He'd
probably heard some gossip already. He said it didn't matter to
him. People could talk if they wanted to.
I thought I could ignore the attraction I'd felt for him
ever since high school, but the more I saw of him, the more
difficult that became. The last few times he'd called me, I'd made
excuses, not wanting to sit across from him with a hard-on,
wishing I could reach out and touch him when he was off limits.
He was willing to befriend a gay man in this conservative little
4

town. I wouldn't fuck that up. I hoped some time away from him
would help me make my dick listen to what my head knew was
right.
He stepped out of the car, and I sucked in my breath.
The light breeze ruffled his thick, dark hair. He grinned at me
and waved. I waved back and tried not to stare, but I couldn't
help myself. He wore a well-cut, gray pin-stripe suit. The coat
settled perfectly on his broad shoulders. He wasn't close enough
for me to be sure, but I bet his royal blue tie would made his eyes
look more blue than green today. I looked down at my dirt-
covered jeans and scruffy boots. I sure looked like the farm boy I
was next to his suaveness.
His suit pants clung to his muscular thighs, and I wanted
those legs wrapped around me. My unruly cock hadn't learned its
lesson. It responded enthusiastically to the sight of him as he
walked toward me. I turned back toward the pasture, attempting
to hide my condition and tried to breathe normally. I could
control myself. Surely I could.
"What are you doing out here? Didn't you have to work
today?" I asked.
He leaned against the fence next to me. "I'm taking a late
lunch, and I missed you, wanted to make sure you were all
right."
He missed me! My heart raced. "I'm sorry. It's just been
busy out here. We've had two foals born this week."
5
Silver Shorts 2012 Week 22
He tilted his head like he was considering my words. "So
you're not ignoring me?"
How did he know? He was too perceptive for my
comfort. "No, nothing like that I just& " My voice trailed off. I
didn't know what to say. I didn't want to lie to him, but I couldn't
tell him I'd been avoiding him because every time I saw him, I
fantasized about him pushing me up against the side of the barn
and fucking me 'til I screamed.
His arm brushed mine as he shifted position. It would be
so easy to touch his thick bicep or the curve of his shoulder in
the guise of a friendly gesture to show that all was good between
us. A drop of sweat ran down my face and my chest tightened. I
wouldn't touch him. I couldn't.
I pushed away from the fence. "You mind following me
to the barn? The kids from the orphanage come out here to ride
on Wednesdays, and I've got to get their horses ready." That was
more or less true. I could wait another half hour, but the work
did need to get done.
He grinned. "No problem. I'm just glad you're doing
okay."
We started walking to the barn. His long legs made easy
strides compared to my hurried ones. I was more nervous than I'd
ever been around him.
"You could have just called, you know?" Shit! That
made me sound like I didn't want him here. "I mean you didn't
6
Silver Shorts 2012 Week 22
have to waste your time driving all the way out here just to check
on me."
"I wanted to see you."
"Y-you did?"
"Yeah. I did." His voice was warm, low and throaty.
I glanced over at him. There seemed to be something in
the way he was looking at me, some longing, something I'd not
seen in his eyes before. It must be loneliness. He didn't seem to
have any friends here except for me. Most of the other guys we'd
gone to school with had either moved away or they were married
with a passel of kids now.
We entered the barn and Cade followed me to the tack
room. He took off his obviously expensive coat and hung it over
one of the hooks on the wall. I tried not to lick my lips as he
unbuttoned his cuffs and rolled up his sleeves. I wanted to run
my tongue through the dark hair on his forearms.
He looked over and caught me watching him. I raised a
brow and tilted my head toward his coat.
"I thought I'd help you work while we talk?"
"You haven't got a clue about how to groom a horse."
There I went sounding like I didn't want him here again.
He shrugged. "Maybe not but I'm willing to learn."
"You're going to get filthy," I warned him.
"Maybe I don't care. Maybe I'd like that."
7
Silver Shorts 2012 Week 22
What the hell does that mean? "Uh, okay." I handed him
Bernice's grooming kit. "Take this and wait over there," I said,
pointing toward the cross ties.
I got Bernice from her stall and attached the ties to her
halter. I could feel Cade's gaze on me. My body heated, and I
suppressed a shudder. How was I going to get through this?
Professional. I had to be professional, treat him like a
riding student learning to groom his own horse. I grabbed a curry
comb from the kit. "Use this to loosen the dirt in her coat. Move
your hand in a circle, working toward her head."
I demonstrated for him. "Focus on her middle where the
saddle will go. We need to get her brushed down so the saddle
won't rub and hurt her."
He took the comb and nodded. I watched his hand for a
few seconds, mesmerized by his long fingers hooked through the
handle of the curry comb. I realized I was just standing there and
got back to work on Bernice's side. I finished currying her, got
two brushes, and handed one to Cade. "Brush in the direction the
hair grows. We've loosened the dirt, so now we'll brush it away.
You might want to stand back a little so the dust doesn't get on
your clothes."
He shrugged again, making the gesture look impish and
sexy, like he'd decided do something naughty, but that was
absurd. He was just helping me so we could talk, except we
weren't talking. I didn't think I could make my voice work.
8
Silver Shorts 2012 Week 22
I watched him work, gave my approval, and started
brushing Bernice's other side. I tried to focus on the horse and
ignore my body's reaction to Cade's proximity. But soon I was
watching him again. He had straw and dust on his shoes. He was
doing what I asked him without complaint, but he looked a little
apprehensive, like he thought Bernice might turn around and bite
him or give him a kick.
I couldn't figure out what had gotten into him, he'd never
shown any interest in the farm before. In fact, I wasn't even sure
why we'd renewed our friendship since we seemed to have so
little in common. But he'd sought me out when he'd moved back
to town. If he was comfortable going out drinking with me, then
who was I to argue.
He looked up from brushing and smiled. "Am I doing
this right?"
Why did it sound like he meant something more than
brushing a horse?
"You're doing fine. I just& "
"What?"
I toyed with the brim of my hat. "What's really going
on? Why are you acting so& different?"
His lips quirked up at the corners like he was trying not
to laugh.
I shook my head. "Sorry. Just forget it. Bernice is clean
enough. Step back and let me check her hooves." I dropped my
brush in the tack bin and grabbed a hoof pick. When I walked
9
Silver Shorts 2012 Week 22
around Bernice, Cade didn't retreat. I took another step forward,
and he still stood his ground.
"You really can't guess, can you?" he asked. "You have
no idea what I'm feeling?"
My chest tightened. "Wh-what you're feeling?" No way
in hell did he mean what I thought. He was straight. If he wasn't
why wouldn't he have said something? Because he's in the
closet? But he's talked about girls and
My brain shut down when he took my hand and held it.
His fingers were warm and strong. I closed my eyes and took a
deep breath.
"If I'm out of line, tell me now and I'll leave."
I forced myself to look at him. This time I was sure of
the heat I saw in his eyes. "I don't want you to leave."
He pulled me into his arms and brought his mouth close
to mine. "I've wanted to do this since I came back. Hell, since a
long time before that," he whispered before that first sweet
contact.
His lips were soft, and he kissed me gently at first. I was
too shocked to do anything but let him have his way with me. I
parted my lips when he increased the pressure. Our tongues met,
and I opened more, needing to taste all of him.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and slid my hands
into his dark hair. We both grew more demanding. Soon the full
lengths of our bodies were pressed against each other. I was
10
Silver Shorts 2012 Week 22
starting to need oxygen desperately, but I refused to break off the
kiss.
The sound of someone clearing her throat brought me to
my senses. I expected Cade to jump away since he'd obviously
not been letting on that he was gay since he'd come home. But he
held onto me, making sure I was steady on my feet, which was a
good thing. I might have fallen right into Bernice otherwise.
My mom stood in the doorway of the adjacent office. To
her credit she didn't act like anything unusual was going on. "I'm
sorry to interrupt, but Lydia called to see if she could bring an
extra child on the ride today, a little girl who was just brought to
the orphanage."
My cheeks burned. And my brain was a mass of
confusion. Had Cade just kissed me? I took a few seconds to
process what I'd heard. Lydia? Child? "Sure. No problem."
My mom smiled at Cade. "Hi, Cade. It's nice to see you
again. Randall's mentioned you, and I've been hoping he'd bring
you out here."
"Nice to see you, ma'am." His voice was calm and even
as if my mom had simply walked in on us talking. He didn't look
embarrassed in the slightest.
"You're welcome to stay for the afternoon and have
dinner with us. I've been after Randall to invite you. I remember
how you used to love my biscuits."
11
Silver Shorts 2012 Week 22
If she didn't stop my cheeks were going to catch on fire.
Cade looked over at me and raised a brow. "I love all your
cooking, Mrs. Yates, but I've got to be getting back to work."
Damned charmer.
"Tomorrow then?" my mom asked.
He looked at me. My heart hammered in my chest. I
hadn't known he was gay, had never dreamed of kissing him, and
now I'd be bringing him to dinner like he was my boyfriend. But
I wanted him there so I gave a slight nod to let him know it was
okay.
He grinned and looked back at my mom. "I'd love to
have dinner here tomorrow. Thanks for the invitation."
"Of course. Anytime. I'm glad Randall's found
someone."
I was going to go crawl under a rock. "Mom, we're not
really "
Cade just grinned like a cat with a canary. "So am I."
What? My mouth dropped open and I stared.
My mom laughed and disappeared into the office.
I glared at Cade. "So that's how it is, is it?"
He grinned. "I sure hope so."
