Image Number 96 - Heart, mitral valve, bacterial endocarditis
Bacterial endocarditis, also known as infective endocarditis (IE), is due to the colonization of the heart valves by bacteria. There are acute and subacute forms of IE and the valves of the left side of the heart are most frequently involved. However, in I.V. drug abusers the valves of the right side are most often involved. Note the large vegetation on the left side of the endocardial lining of this heart.
