2 STUDYING DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHY IN THE UK

2. STUDYING DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHY IN THE UK
There are two types of radiography - diagnostic and therapeutic. Diagnostic
radiographers use their knowledge of healthcare technology and their excellent
interpersonal skills, to produce and interpret images which help diagnose illness. They
work mainly within the radiology and imaging departments of hospitals. Radiology
departments within hospitals normally include a wide range of different imaging modalities
e.g. ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, and X-rays. Diagnostic
radiographers are able to undertake most investigations but may later specialize in one
particular area. Therapeutic radiographers are also known as radiotherapy
radiographers. They work closely with doctors, nurses, and other members of the oncology
team to treat patients with cancer.
The BSc (Hons) Radiography (Diagnostic Imaging) programme provides the knowledge
and skills needed by radiographers to work in the health service. Anatomy, physiology, and
pathology, radiographic technique, radiation physics, equipment, and digital imaging are
all included in the different modules of the course. You study some interprofessional
learning modules together with students from other health disciplines, such as nurses,
physiotherapists and social workers. This shared learning experience allows you to develop
teamworking and understand the contribution different professionals make.
The programme consists of a 3 year full time course based around 3 academic terms per
year. Approximately 50% of the time will be spent in university and 50% on clinical
placement in large teaching hospitals, district general hospitals, and specialist
departments.
