The Coliseum is one of Rome's most famous monuments. It's a giant ancient theatre in the shape of a circle, called an amphitheatre. It's right in the middle of Rome with traffic whizzing all around it. It was built over 2000 years ago and held up to 50,000 spectators who went there to see gladiators fighting or other kinds of entertainment such as animal hunts, executions, and plays.
But the problem is what to do with it now. It's very old, very damaged and in the middle of a busy traffic route. The roads around it (1) _____ (close) to the traffic, but that would create enormous problems when driving from one part of Rome to the other. Some people say that cars (2) _____ (not allow) anywhere near it, and special public transport (3) _____ (design) to take people round it. They want plans (4) _____ (develop) for this, and believe the Coliseum deserves (5) _____ (treat) especially carefully because it is so unique. Even the structure of the building is already beginning (6) _____ (damage) because of the traffic pollution and the way the traffic shakes it.
Another problem is simply keeping it open to the public. In fact some people think it (7) _____ (close) to the public, and that it (8) _____ (open) only for very special reasons, like making films, holding concerts or church festivals. The problem is the huge number of tourists who visit it. The Coliseum continues (9) _____ (see) as an extremely important part of historical Rome, so everyone wants to go there. But so many people come that they end up damaging it - they don't mean to, of course. One thing is for certain - the future of the Coliseum (10) _____ (not guarantee).

The future of English
A very interesting report, called English Next has recently been published on the future of English. The author did several years of research into where and why English is learned and what others languages are (1) _____ learned as foreign languages.
He's discovered that as it's become a global language, English is being taught to younger and younger children, and that sometimes English is being used to teach the children (2) _____ of their own language. The reason for this is to improve learners' English and get them ready to (3) _____ in English at university level too, so they can go to university anywhere in the world.
(4)_____ interesting finding is that in the future fewer people will need to learn English as everyone will know it already. English may become something that people are just expected to know - like IT or mathematics. This means there may (5) _____ be so many jobs around for English teachers in the future.
But English isn't the only language that is growing - languages like Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic are growing too. (6) _____ people move to towns and smaller languages die out, the bigger languages get bigger because people learn a second or a third language as well, to be able to live in their new environment. For many people in the world, speaking two, three or more languages is perfectly normal, and people who speak only (7) _____ , as is often the case with British people, may well, according to the report, find themselves without a job, as employers will prefer a multi-lingual employee.
As English goes global, it is (8) _____ as well. A lot of new vocabulary is creeping in and the grammar is changing too. Things (9) _____ were unacceptable years ago, such as using the past instead of the perfect tense, begin to become acceptable because it happens so often and everyone understands it.
We sometimes think that English is the language of the future and will replace everything else. But this report suggests that English (10) _____ change in all kinds of ways, and other languages will too.
