Should students have full time, part-time or seasonal jobs? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type of work.
Do you find the idea of working abroad attractive (why/why not) ?
A couple years ago being a student was something that not everyone could afford to. In our parents annual only few of them could study. Now, everything's changed and learning at university becomes standard. Students have also a choice in which type of school they want to learn: night class study extra mural or stationary. But nowadays young people don't want to be only students. They want to learn at several specializations to have better start in the future or even more prestigious work.
There are three kind of jobs: full time, part-time and seasonal. Stationary students often choose part-time jobs. It has many advantages. You can earn extra money which make young people feel more independent from parents. This kind of job also guarantees learning new skills which is essential to gain work experience. Another thing is that they could make new friends and become more confident. Part-time job definitely helps future career and it took good in their resume.
But on the other hand it distracts them from studying and can interfere with schedule. Also there's no time for family and friends because they're always in a hurry - from study to work and inversely. And of course the main disadvantage is that the salary is too small in order to be financially independent.
Seasonal job is good for all types of students. The best part about it is that if they put effort into the types of businesses that bring them money during either the summer or during the holidays, their chances of finding a job can be pretty good. Working seasonal is a great way of earning money for holiday and gain valuable work experience. It's also a great opportunity to get their foot in the door and make a good impression which can turn into part-time or full time work after holidays.
From the other point of view, being a seasonal worker means that they'll have very short holidays. Moreover, that kind of job is connected with very high or low temperatures depending on season.
Full time job is the best for extra mural students. They could pay on their own for their studies because salary is much higher. Also there's a possibility of improving qualifications on courses and professional trainings organized by employers. But for me, the main reason is that they could set up home because they're independent.
On the other hand, nowadays it's very difficult to find a job in profession you choose. Also you will have to pay taxes and work in definite hours.
In my opinion students should have part-time or seasonal jobs thanks to which they become financially independent, meet new people and gain work experience. It's a great way to fill the break between activities without damage on education and social life.
Couple years ago appears also a possibility of working abroad. I find it very attractive mostly because of salary which is higher than in Poland. Moreover employers would be impressed by student's initiative and motivation in gaining a job abroad. Also the ability to communicate and work as a team with people from different cultural background is an invaluable skill that will look great in CV. Of course, it also improves professional and language skills.
Personally, I would stay in Poland. I don't know if I could communicate abroad. Also maintenance is very expensive, my biological cycle would have been changed and I'm scared to death of flying planes. But the main reason for “no” is being far from my family and friends which I would miss a lot. I think couple more zeros on my bank account is not worth of that feeling.
On balance, working abroad has as many disadvantages as positive aspects. The decision of whether to work abroad or stay in your own country remains a personal choice matter.
