How big are our cities?
We often think that cities are getting bigger and bigger, but in fact that's not so. In many cases the opposite is happening. While some cities are (1) _____ bigger and bigger and becoming what they call mega-cities, other cities are (2) _____ in size. Cities like Manchester, Glasgow, Detroit or Leipzig used to be busy, bustling centres of trade and commerce, but are now slowly emptying out, the victims of falling populations and failing industries.
This is happening most in older countries such as Russia, America and Japan. In Russia, the effects of falling life- (3) _____, very low birth rates and fewer jobs in old industries have resulted in 93 cities now getting smaller. Even in China, a country which (4) _____ seen the birth of mega-cities such as Shenzhen, smaller cities inland are getting smaller (5) _____ people move to the bigger cities on the coast in search of work. In fact, one quarter of the world's cities are currently getting smaller - twice the number of ten years ago.
You (6) _____ think that smaller cities are a good idea. But at the moment at least, things aren't working out that way. These smaller cities are the result of poverty or neglect of one kind or another. There are (7) _____ jobs, and as the jobs go, the people go too, and so buildings are uncared for and local services such as policing, rubbish collection and schools begin to disappear. While the young and educated move away, the old and unemployed get (8) _____ behind. What you see in these shrinking cities is empty streets with shops and houses shut down, rubbish blowing along the streets, violence, and sometimes, goats and sheep moving in (9) _____ eat the grass in abandoned parks and gardens.
Architects and town planners, who for many recent years have been focussing on expanding cities, are now turning (10) _____ attention to how to deal with shrinking cities.
