On most evenings in Britain, you can watch a reality TV programme. There isn't a script, actors or a story but there are real people who are followed by cameras, lighting and recording teams for a week, a month or even longer.
One programme which was on TV earlier this year was called Frontier House. In this programme, three American families spent one summer living in the state of Montana, just as settlers used to do in the nineteenth century. Settlers' lives were very hard so it was a difficult test for modern people. For example, they had to build wooden houses, grow food, catch fish and raise animals.
The twenty-first century families had gone to Montana expecting to work hard, but it was even more difficult than they had thought to keep themselves clean, fed and warm. They had to carry every litre of water that they needed and, of course, they couldn't go to the supermarket when the kitchen cupboard was empty.
The families returned to their twenty-first century lives at the end of the summer. They had all had an unforgettable experience and learned a lot about how settlers used to live more than one hundred years ago.
