CAE TEST AND TIPS

PAPER 5 Speaking (15 MINUTES)

Part 1 (3 minutes)

The examiner gets both candidates to talk briefly about themselves by asking you questions such as:

How do you travel to work / college?

Are you satisfied with the public transport system in this town?

What is your favourite form of transport and why?

Part 2 (3 or 4 minutes)

You each talk for one minute without interruption in response to a visual prompt. You are encouraged to make a brief comment after your partner has spoken.

The World of Work (Describe and comment)

Turn to pictures 1 - 3 which show people working very hard.

Candidate A, describe what they are doing and why you think they are working in this way. You have a minute to do this.

Candidate B, in which photograph do you think people are working hardest?

Living Dangerously (Describe and comment)

Turn to pictures 1 - 2 which show people in dangerous situations.

Candidate B, compare and contrast these situations, saying how you think they happened. You have a minute to do this.

Candidate A, which situation do you think is the most dangerous?

Part 3 (3 or 4 minutes)

You both discuss a decision-making 1 problem-solving task, illustrated by visual material, without interruption by the examiner.

Freetime Activities (Prioritise and discuss)

Turn to pictures 1 - 5 taken from a leaflet about a one-month summer course to study English in England. It shows some of the things that students could do when classes have finished. If only three of these activities can be provided, which do you think students would prefer?

Part 4 (3 or 4 minutes)

The examiner encourages you to develop the discussion in Part 3 by asking questions such as:

Did you reach agreement? How do your opinions differ?

Do you think the age of students makes any difiference?

Are there any other activities you would recommend for such a course?

Tip strip

- don't panic if you are do not know the words to describe what is in it. Use paraphrase and expressions such as 'the thing in the corner', `the stuff he's carrying' and `the thing used for ... +ing'.

Part 3

Co-operate with your partner. Take turns and provide opportunities for your partner to continue speaking on the same topic. Ask questions or make statements that invite a response.
