A relative clause is a part of a sentence NON DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
beginning with a RELATIVE PRONOUN.
We use them to convert two sentences in one. They give extra information. You don't need
For example: them to understand the sentence and they
I work in this shop. It's called PINK Shop. are written between commas. If you take out
The shop where I work is called PINK Shop the relative clause, the sentence still makes
Or to make definitions: sense. Example:
-A waiter is a person who serves drinks. *Mary, who is French, is a nice girl.
-A pub is a place where you can have a drink *Mary is a nice girl
DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES BASIC RELATIVE PRONOUNS
They give you the information you need
to understand the sentence. There are for PEOPLE who/that
no commas. DON'T OMIT the clause for THINGS which/that
when it's a SUBJECT CLAUSE for PLACES where
Examples: for OWNERS whose
-That's the girl who invited me. for REASONS why
-That's the place where I work. for TIMES when
OMIT the clause when it's an OBJECT
Examples: However it's better to use wh-clauses instead of
