The following orders bind officers performing navigational watch to observe:
Before taking over the watch, always check the ship's position as well as the courses in charts.
Make a control of the course on the gyro compass and compare with the magnetic compass.
At night, make sure that the navigational lights are clearly visible.
In case of poor visibility start up the radars and call the Master immediately.
When passing oncoming ships always give a wide berth.
When it is oncoming ship's duty to give way for us, but she is not doing so, then give signals (whistle - Aldis lamp - VHF) and turn away from the other ship. Whenever necessary, do not be afraid of using the engine (e.g. reduce speed, stop or go astern) if any dangerous situation occurs.
It goes without saying that all the bridge equipment is to the officers free disposal, and furthermore, it is their duty to make use of same.
When navigating in open seas than make astronomical observations whenever possible. When navigating coastways make positions with short intervals by means of bearing of landmarks etc. and also by radar. In general use all possibilities to make the ships position by means of using all the equipment at hand e.g. satellite and R.D.F.
Deviation of magnetic compass to be checked once per watch. Once per day 2nd Officer should enter the results in the error book.
If any doubt regarding the ships position, if heavy traffic or if we enter areas congested by fishermen then call the Master immediately.
Generally speaking, if you have any doubt or reason, wherever, at sea or in port, then always call the Master immediately, and always remember that you do never get in trouble for calling the Master once more than necessary, but you will have severe trouble if you do not call.
Always follow the order and regulations and use your common sense. Navigate with caution.
