§ 16. This vowcl is rather similar to Polish y, and for this reason in some Polish publications it is transcribed with the symbol [yj. It is only a litde * lower and- morę front than Polish y (hence its description: half-close front), and sounds somewhat similar to the raised Polish e in such w ord
and the preceding consonant is not to be palatalized. It occure in bot stTessed and unstressed syllables.

[i] in streased syllables:

Notę 1. In the position before voiced consonants [i] is a litde. longer than before voicdese consonants, e.g.:
big, fig, twig, pig, dig, bid, lid, kid, did, mb, crib, bridge, ridge Compare: bit bid pick pig Dick dig rich ridge
Notę 2. In the position before nasal consonants [m, n, ij], [i] should In- pronounced without nasalization. It should be pronounced as before tither voiced consonants, Le. slightly longer:
brim, dim, slim, swim, in, chin, skin, tin, sin, Finn, Sting, swing, wing, wind, drink, link, inch, pinch, sińce, wince, singe
Notę 3. In the position before l realized as so-called dark [1], before a puuse or a consonant, [i] is almost identical with Polish y:
mili, bill, will, ill, stul, kill, pili, biU, fUl, mUk
Notę 4. [i] is longer when it occurs in one-syllable words than in words uf two or morę syllables:
big biggest rich richest sick sickness wind windy tick ticket Notę 5. Finał [i], however, is a little longer and somewhat lowered Ntpi-i ially when preceded by a syllable with a short vowel and a single Bonsonant:
