The Stitch
1. On the original piece, The areas marked as gold are embroidered in gilt strip.
2. Some of the colors on the original have faded. The areas marked as red on the pattern actually appear as a washed out pink, and the areas marked as blue may have been much darker originally.
3. As in some of the other items on display at the V&A, the phrase "satin stitch" does not ref er to the common modern embroidery stitch, but to any stitch that covers the fabric completely and smoothly.
