Shortened Rows at the Right Edge of a Facing
Hardly anyone who kniis likes to work shortened rows. But ifs not really difFicult once you get the hang of it.
Working shortened rows
means working fewer rows over sonie stitches. These rows are needed it you wanr to make a shawl colbr or a dart, or i i you are combining pattems thar reąuire a different number ol" rows tor the same length, soch as garter stitch and stockinette stitch.
Shortened Rows with Yarn Over
Thcrc are 2 ways of prtwenring a hole from forming when you work shortened rows. The tirst is shown mi these pa ges ustny the cxnmple of a garter-stitch facing that is kmt on. Here, you rurn with a yam <>ver. and in the ncxt row kmt the yam over cogerher with the first ot the stitches that was noc worked before.
If you knir a facing on m ribbing paltem, you shoukl add shortened rows from unie co time. becausc when you knit 1. purl I altcrnateh. the knit and purl stitches puli into cach other slightly, which niakes the stitches larger. and the facing will strctcłi out morc casily. Also. facing' are normally worked with smaller-sirc needles. and that is not possible when tltey are worked together with the main piece. In rhis case, however, in contrust to what u. shown herc, you don’t work morę rowsover the stitches of the facing. but tather ovor the other stitches (see knit-in facings. pages 66-67).
Iln a row on the right sido of the work, knit to the end of the facing. Tum the work and make a tight yarn over ahead of the first stitch.
3... knit the facing stitches up to the yarn over. Thon knit the yarn over together with tho first stitch of the pattern.

shortened row can hardly be seen. Here, the shortened rows are worked every 6 rows.
