I don t I believe it ■

Ancient sailors told tales of giant squid sinking ships. Though jumbo squid are only 6.6 ft (2 m) long, they can still wreak havoc. They ram divers, bite row boat oars in half, and squirt fishermen and women with ink and jets of water.

How to:

swim like a squid

Muscle stops water from

escaping

w ■ ■ Suck water into your mantle—the bag of skin and muscle that contains your major organs.

Water shoots out

Mantle cavity contracts

Blow the

water out through your funnel tubę.

This creates a fast, strong jet that propels you forward.

Large eyes: Let in plenty of light, giving the octopus excellent eyesight and night vision

Eye pupil: Always stays horizontal, so the octopus is able to identify shapes whatever position it is in

w ■ To change direction, point your funnel tubę a different way. Let your tentacles trail and just go with the flow.

Six deep-sea cephalopods

Thin muscle layer:

Allows the octopus to alter its skin texture

Arms: Help the octopus “crawl" along the sea bed

The dumbo octopus has two fins that look like the big ears of Walt Disney’s flying elephant. Waving these fins helps the octopus move around.

The strange-looking piglet 'squid is around the same size as an avocado. It gets its name from its piglike snout.

The cockatoo squid holds ' its tentacles in a sort of crest over its head.

The vampire squid has ' webbed skin between its arms, which looks like a bat’s wing.

It hangs in the water by drooping its arms to form an umbrella shape.

"The flapjack octopus looks like a pancake, thanks to the webs of skin connecting its arms.

The glass squid has an ' almost transparent body, so predators look right through it!
