How fast can
a car go?
Racecars are fast, but the cars that set land-speed records are even faster. In 1997, Andy Green set a world land-speed record ot 762 mph (1,227 kph) in a jet-powered car called Thrust SSC. It was able to travel morę than three times faster than a Formula 1 racecar.

■ They suck a racecar down hard agalnst the ground— called downforce— and give its tires morę grip to go faster around corners.
■ So much of this downforce is created that a Formula 1 car or an IndyCar could be driven upside-down on the ceiling of a tunnel!
