Who built Stonehenge?

Prehistorie farmers constructed the stone circle of Stonehenge in Southern England around 5,000 years ago. It was an amazing feat of engineering, requiring carefui planning, advanced construction skills, and the labor of huge numbers of people. This teils us that the site had great meaning and importance for the people who built it.

Great Pyramid

Built c. 2560 bce as a tomb for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, this mountain of stone contains approximately 2,300,000 blocks.

This huge pyramid was built c.300 ce in the ancient Mexican city of Teotihuacan, the largest city in Central America at that time.

The Maya of Central America placed their ornately decorated temples at the top of steep-sided pyramids madę of layers of stone.

Inca walls

The Inca of Peru slotted the blocks of their walls together so tightly that it is impossible to slip a knife blade between them.

No one knows why Stonehenge was built, though there are many theories, ranging from an astronomical observatory to a place of human sacrifice. Sunlight pours into the center at midwinter sunset and midsummer sunrise.

Great Zimbabwe

Built around 700 years ago, the city of Great Zimbabwe was the center of a rich gold-trading African kingdom.
