Rightly dubbed "the first classic of the modern environment movement," Silent Spring remains a book of extraordinary depth. If the campaign against DDT has been largely won in the developed world, there’s still a fight going on in the South. But this is not just a book abóut the dangers of pesticides: it is an intensely evocative and powerful account of the rupture between ourselves and naturę, and of the illusions spread by politicians to justify that rupture.
The Gaia controversy rumbles on 14 years after this book first appeared. Lovelock has of course added much to his initial hypothesis (that the Earth is a living, self-regulatlng organism), but the elegance and freshness of the original text is a source of delight, and anything that rattles the scientific establishment like this must be a good thing.
The whale has come to symbolise everything that's both good and bad about o.ur rel^ti.onship with other creatures, and this wonderful book evokes the whale's life and being with unforgettable drama. But you can't just think all this green stuff; you've got to feel it, let go for it. Heathcote Williams's poetry does all of that with knobs on. __

Farmer, poet, essayist, philosopher, naturalist, Wendel Berry is a real one-off. A love of the land combines with a love of the English language to produce that rarest combination of true depth accessible to all. If every leader had spend a month working on Wendel Berry's farm in Kentucky, then we could do without any further Earth Summitsl Reading him is the next best thing.
This book was first published In 1982 - but its re-release in paperback Is welcome because it is still one of the most attractive and useful guides for amateur naturalists, especially those starting from scratch.
Part of the book is devoted to experiments in the home, such as how to dissect a cockroach, keep a snake or mount a skeleton. And for those who just want to read about some of the world's richest habitats, this book is an egually good companion.___ ,
