The Image
and other classic French stories of submission
The Image was first published in Paris in 1956, and was suppressed almost immediately. Ten years latcr an English translation appeared in the United States, but few copies were printed and the book has been unavailable for twenty-five years.
This edition contains a new translation of the original text, and a preface by Pauline Reage, the autlior of The Story of O.
In her work, The Pomogmphic Imogination,
Susan Sontag described The Image as having ‘a quality that can’t be ascribed simply to its abundance of the usual writerly endowments of sensibility, energy and intelligence.' The story is simple yet subtle, intriguing and very erotic: the narrator, Jean de Berg, is drawn to the delectable and apparently innocent Annę. But Annę is the sex slave of Claire, an icy beauty whom Jean knew years previously. He becomes involved in the womeifs gatnes of ritual punishment - but who is seducing whom?
les Ecurluteswas the title of a collection of stories published in the 1920s. Their author,Juan Muntaner, was a member of the surrealist movement and tlie stories have a mysterious, haunting eroticism. Two of the best stories, in a new translation, are reprinted in this volume.
