The Futurę and the Conditional

The Futurę Tense

The futurę tense is used to indicate actions that will take place at some point la ter on, viewed from the present. In Spanish el futuro is the equivalent of Engiish will or shall followed by a verb. Al-though you will find the futurę tense in written Spanish, spoken Spanish, like spoken Engiish, frequently conveys the futurę with a penfrasis. Perifrasis literally means the use of a group of words to express an idea, a concept, or an action. Notę in the second exam-ple below how the same idea is expressed with the futurę tense and then with periphrasis in both languages:

Compraremos el auto    We will buy the car tomorrow.

mańana.

Vamos a comprar el auto We are going to buy the car mańana.    tomorrow.

Both Engiish and Spanish use the “to go” verb: going to {buy, run, work, etc. ) = ir a + infinitive to express the futurę.

Formation

The futurę tense in Spanish is formed by attaching the appropriate futurę endings to the (entire) infinitive ofa verb. Use the followmg conjugations as models for all regular verbs in the futurę tense.
