18.4 Typical starter motor mounting for 2.5L four-cylinder and
3.0L V6 applications
19.5 To remove the solenoid housing from the starter motor,
remove the screws and tum ft clockwise
1 Starter bolts
2 Shim

4 Remove the starter motor bolts (see illustration).
5 Remove the starter motor. Notę the location of the spacer shim(s).
6 Installation is the reverse of removal. Be surę to install the spacer shim(s) in exactly the same location.
7 Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Caution: \f the vehicle is equipped with a Delco Loc II audio system, make surę you have the correct activation codę before disconnecting the battery. See the information at the front of this manuał for the radio re-activation procedurę.
8 Remove the intake air duet.
9 Remove the engine cooling fan (see Chapter 3).
10 Remove the oil filter (see Chapter 1).
11 Remove the starter mounting bolts and puli the starter out enough to disconnect the battery cable and wiring harness from the solenoid.
12 Carefully lift the starter out between the intake manifold and radiator.
13 Installation is‘the reverse of removal.
19 Starter solenoid - removal and installation
Ref er to illustration 19.5 1 Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Caution: If the vehicle is equipped with a Delco Loc II audio system, make surę you have the correct activation codę before disconnecting the battery. 2 Remove the starter motor (see Sec-tion18).
3 Disconnect the strap from the solenoli to the starter motor terminal.
4 Remove the two screws which securi the solenoid to the starter motor.
5 Twist the solenoid in a clockwise din tion to disengage the flange from the starti body (see illustration).
6 To install, first make surę the retu spring is in position on the plunger, the insert the solenoid body into the starter hod ing and tum the solenoid counterclockwise t engage the flange.
7 Install the two solenoid screws and coih nect the motor strap.
