Men’s cotehardies

4

4. Men's cotehardies, mid 14th century

Cotehardie sleeves were commonly short enough to reveal the doublet sleeves beneath. The hem is knee-length or shorter and the edge may be dagged. The neckline is normally covered by a hood, which may be dagged to match and in a different colour. A belt is normally worn.

Left Characteristics of the early style: buttons ending at waist level and long peaks out in one with the sleeves.

Right Later, shorter style. The buttons reach to the dagged hem, and streamers are sewn onto the short sleeves.

5. Pattern for Fig 4

The body is tight-fitting and needs to follow the shape of the doublet closely.

Tracę the personal bodice Błock. Lower the neck linę and underarm by 1-2 cm. Add a little ease all round for freer movement: here 0.5 cm ease at CB, and 1 cm on each side seam and at CF.

Mark the required length of the skirts below the waist, and flarę them slightly.

For parti-coloured garments, cut one Back, Front and sleeve in each fabric, taking care to cut the sleeves to match the correct halves.
