Row 1: (RS) K5, *p5, k5; rep from * to end. Row 2: (WS) P5, *k5, p5; rep from * to end. Rows 3, 5, and 7: Rep Row 1.
Rows 4, 6, and 8: Rep Row 2.
Row 9: (RS) P5, *k5, p5; rep from * to end. Row 10: (WS) K5, *p5, k5; rep from * to end. Rows 11,13, and 15: Rep Row 9.
Rows 12,14, and 16: Rep Row 10.
Rep Rows 1-16 for patt.
CO 51 sts. Work 4 rows in garter st (knit every row). Next row: K3 (edge sts; work in garter st throughout), place marker (pm), work Row 1 of basketweave patt (see Stitch Guide) over 45 sts, pm, k3 (edge sts; work in garter st throughout). Next row: K3, sl m, work Row 2 of basketweave patt to last 3 sts, sl m, k3.
Cont in patt with garter st edges until piece measures Zi" less than desired length, ending with Rows 8 or 16 of patt. Work 3 rows in garter st. BO all sts.
Weave in ends. Steam press. Avoid stretching CO and BO edges. □
