STIFF-ARMING COUNTERS
Left man demonstrates typical stiff-arm stance which places Right man at awkward distance and interferes with freedom of play, Photo #1. (Stiff-arming is used by inept beginners and by those who have been improperly taught and rely on strength instead of skill).
First Counter: Make surę your jacket is Loosened. Holding opponent's sleeves at under part, puli forward with both arms and drop shoulders so that stiffened arms slide over your shoulders, Photo #2. You are now able to move in close enough to attempt throw.
Second Counter: Release sleeve grip with right hand; using forearm, press outward at opponent's elbow. As his arm bends, regrip high at upper arm and get into position for throw, Photo #4.
Your action in countering the stiff-arm also serves to distract his attention while you move in for throw.
Third Counter: Stiff-arm opponent is weak forward because of his own action. Use weakness by pulling him still further in direction of his push, Photo #5.
When he is considerably off-balance, continue forward puli with your left hand as you reach around to regrip at his collar with your right hand, Photo #6. You must then execute throw from squat or deep knee-bend position.
Notę: Once you have countered the stiff-arming action, you must lock your opponent close into your body. Execute your throw with a predomi-nantly body action, rather than depending on arm action. Your arms will be occupied with keeping opponent locked in.
