Fj: Aragonese light cavalryman of Cardona family

The light cavalry of Catalonia and Aragon would evolve into the light horsemen d la jineta character-istic of later medieval Spain. Many had fuli mail hauberks, light helmets and large round shields, but this man also seems to have a thickly padded armour beneath his surcoat. The peculiar object behind the saddle, shown on an Aragonese carving, is here interpreted as a seat for an infantryman. (Main sources: relief carving from Poblet Monastery, late i 3th cent. Met. Mus. New York)

G: Battle of Courtrai, 1302:

Gi: French knight

In the i4th century ‘great helms’ would be relegated to the tournament, but this knight still wears a simple version built up of riveted sections. Beneath his hauberk is a fabric-covered coat-of-plates, while his mail chausses show the outline of rigid greaves beneath. Large domed poleyns protect his knees. The man wields a heavy falchiotr, and his horse is protected by a fuli mail bard with a ąuilted lining. (Main sources: History of William of Tyre, French early i4th cent. Ms. Fr. 352, Bib. Nat. Paris; Les Chroniąues de St. Denis, French early 14th cent. Ms. Roy. i6.G.VI, Brit. Lib. London; Histoiredu Bon Roi Alexandre, French c.1300, Ms. 11040, Bib. Royale, Brussels)

G2: Senior Flemish militiaman The metal-lined coat-of-plates worn by this man was seen in both France and Germany. The rest of his equipment includes a chapel-de-fer worn over a close-fitting cewelliere and gauntlets covered with whale-bone scales. The spiked goedendag ‘mace’ was closely associated with Flemish infantry. (Main sources: Courtrai Chest, Flemish early 14A cent.
